Cartagena Activities by Time of Day

Safety note: The US State Department puts Colombia at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel” (advisory dated 31 March 2026). The UK FCDO’s “advise against” list covers remote border and rural areas, including the south of Bolívar Department, and Cartagena is not named. What visitors report in the city itself is theft of phones, bags and gold chains, drinks spiked with scopolamine, and overcharging or robbery in unlicensed taxis. Cartagena de Indias is easiest to plan by the clock. The sun is fierce in the middle of the day, so the best outdoor activities sit at the start and end of it, with museums, a long lunch or time in the sea in between. Peso prices below use about 3,200 COP to the US dollar, which moves daily, so check the same-day rate.

First light to mid-morning

Walk the walls. They are free and open to the public, and early is the coolest time to be up there. Stay off the stonework itself.
Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas. It opens at 7am every day and closes at 6pm. The full foreign adult rate is 38,000 COP (about US$12). Ramps are steep, shade is thin and the tunnels can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip and carry water.
Totumo mud volcano. It sits about 55 km north-east, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road. Entry is about 20,000 COP, and a mud massage, photos and a rinse-off each cost a further 5,000 to 10,000 COP or so. There are no lockers. A weekday morning is calmer than the hotel-shuttle and cruise-bus hours.
Mangrove canoe at La Boquilla. Local fishermen paddle dugout canoes through the channels of the Ciénaga de la Virgen. Listings show about 45 minutes afloat, from about US$60 on a shared excursion to about US$125 private.

Midday: indoors or in the water

Museo del Oro Zenú on Parque de Bolívar is reported as free, with gold, ceramics and restored ocarinas you can hear. Its reported hours are Tuesday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 2pm. The Museo Histórico de Cartagena in the Palacio de la Inquisición building shows replica torture instruments and is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 6pm.

For a full day on the water, boats to the Rosario Islands leave from Muelle de la Bodeguita. Snorkel and dive spots are reported around Isla Grande and Isla Tintipán. Cash charges sit outside most tour prices: a pier-use fee (roughly 18,000 to 34,000 COP), park entry of 13,500 COP in the Rosario sector, and compulsory accident insurance reported at about 8,800 COP, without which you cannot land. Expect coral, reef fish and sea turtles, keep your lifejacket on and stay clear of moving boats.

Afternoon: wind and waves

Kitesurfing runs from Manzanillo del Mar and La Boquilla, both on the road toward Barranquilla. Nativo Kite and Pure Kitesurf are the schools listed, and a one-hour private lesson is about US$70 to 76. The trade winds that make it worthwhile blow roughly December to April.

Evening: music and street life

Plaza de la Trinidad in Getsemaní fills with street food and music after dark. For live salsa, Café Havana lists a nightly band, and Quiebracanto lists socials on Wednesdays and Fridays and classes on Thursdays and Saturdays, with entry about 20,000 COP. Confirm opening times first. A chiva party bus, a night ride with music and club entries, is listed at around 26 euros by one reseller, so ask exactly what the ticket covers.

Public drinking is against the law, so finish your drink before you step outside. Walk back by taxi, not through Getsemaní’s side streets. Colombian law on the sexual exploitation of children is strictly enforced against visitors, and concerns can be reported on 141.
