Luxor Activities by Time of Day
Luxor runs on two clocks. Before 09:30 the monuments are cool and nearly empty, and after 17:00 the riverfront fills with life again. The hours between belong to shade, lunch and a long drink. Build the day around that rhythm and almost everything gets easier.
Before sunrise: the balloon
Dawn flights lift off from the west bank and drift over the farmland, the cliffs and the temples as the light turns amber. Use licensed operators only. Flights were suspended from 1 June to 31 August 2026 because of the heat and restarted gradually from September, and wind cancellations are routine, so keep a spare morning in your plan. Expect roughly USD 40 to 100 per person, usually with hotel pickup, a boat crossing, tea and a 45 minute flight. You can compare balloon trips on GetYourGuide before settling on one. 06:00 to 09:30: the big sites
The gates open early and the stone is still cool. The Valley of the Kings opens at 06:00, and its official site lists the general adult ticket at EGP 750, which covers three tombs. Karnak costs EGP 600. Plan on paying by card at the main gates and keep a few small EGP notes for everything else. In June to August the thermometer reaches 42 to 46C, so finish outdoors by 09:30 and carry two litres of bottled water, because tap water is not safe to drink.
Midday: somewhere with a roof
The Luxor Museum is air-conditioned and costs EGP 400 for adults. The compact Mummification Museum costs EGP 220 and explains the 70 day embalming process with tools, canopic jars and animal mummies. Lunch can be a koshari bowl for EGP 30 to 80 or a ta’ameya sandwich for EGP 15 to 30, followed by a rest at the hotel.
Late afternoon: the water
The public ferry crosses every 10 to 15 minutes for EGP 5 to 10, since there is no pedestrian bridge in town. A one hour felucca sail runs about EGP 400 to 600 for the whole boat, so agree the price and duration at the dock. A glass of karkadeh or mint tea at a riverside coffeehouse costs EGP 20 to 40.
After dark
Luxor Temple stays open in the evening under floodlights, with adult entry at EGP 500. The Karnak sound and light show is ticketed separately, with reseller prices around USD 42 to 77, so check the schedule at the show’s website . The souk is liveliest once the heat drops.
Paperwork and money

Tip: put the balloon on your first full morning. If the wind cancels it, the Valley and Karnak slot on the next morning is still free.
