Uruguay Activities, Nearest to Farthest
Most visitors land in Montevideo, so the useful question is how far from the capital you are willing to go. Uruguay is small, and its best activities fall into four rings of travel time.
Under an hour: Montevideo and Canelones
Start free. The Rambla is a continuous waterfront path of about 22 km along the Río de la Plata, and locals walk it with a mate gourd and a thermos. Teatro Solís runs guided tours in Spanish, English and Portuguese, and they cost nothing on Wednesdays.
Canelones, the wine region, lies about 45 minutes north. Bodega Bouza and Establecimiento Juanicó are separate wineries with their own visits, so book each one on its own. Wine-tourism visits fall under the restaurant card discount described in the money section below. If you would rather have an organised tasting, you can compare Uruguay wine tours on GetYourGuide .
About two hours: Punta del Este and Piriápolis
Coaches from Terminal Tres Cruces reach Punta del Este in roughly two hours. La Mano, the giant concrete fingers on Playa Brava, is free. Casapueblo at Punta Ballena charges UYU 600 for general entry and holds its sunset ceremony daily.
Near Piriápolis, Cerro Pan de Azúcar rises 423 m to a 35 m cross, and the ascent can close in heat waves. The native-fauna breeding station beside it is free in summer, from 08:00 to 19:00.
Nearly three hours: Colonia del Sacramento
The coach from Montevideo takes about 2h45. From Buenos Aires, Colonia Express crosses in about an hour and Buquebus with its Seacat service in about 1h15; fares are tiered by class and date, so compare them on buquebus.com . The UNESCO-listed Barrio Histórico is free to wander, and the Faro de Colonia lighthouse charges a small entry fee.
The far east: Rocha
Cabo Polonio has no road in. Cars and ordinary buses stop at the terminal on Ruta 10, km 264.5, and open 4x4 trucks cross the dunes for UYU 470 return. Terminal parking is UYU 350 a day, and the official Rocha tourism schedule lists entries from 05:30 to 20:00 and exits from 06:00 to 18:00. Tents and pets are not allowed. Below the 1881 lighthouse, a sea lion colony basks on the rocks.
Santa Teresa National Park, nearby, is free from Tuesday to Sunday, 08:00 to 18:00, and its stone fortress charges UYU 50.
Money and seasons
A bare “$” on a menu means pesos, and the rate is about 40 UYU to US$1. Restaurants cut VAT by 9 points, from 22% to about 13%, when you pay by card, and that runs to April 2027. Foreign-card visitors should ask whether a full exemption applies. Hotels charge non-residents 0% VAT with foreign ID.
Summer, December to February, fills the coast and doubles hotel rates. Winter, June to August, is cool and windy, and many beach restaurants close. From July to October, southern right whales can be seen from headlands at Punta del Este, José Ignacio and La Paloma.
Verdict
Choose by the days you have: two days stay inside the first ring plus Colonia, five days reach Punta del Este, and a week is what Cabo Polonio deserves. The multi-day trips page lays out that order, and the day trips page covers the shorter hops.
Tip: book your Cabo Polonio bed before you book the bus, because beds there are few.
