Adventure Sports Kairouan
Adventure Sports and Active Options Around Kairouan
Kairouan lies on open farmland in central Tunisia, with no cliffs, gorges or dunes close to the city. Think of it as a base for walking and for well-chosen trips rather than a sports destination.
Walking
- The medina is flat, so a long loop on foot is the easiest way to be active. Begin early to avoid the heat.
- Pair a walk with the Great Mosque courtyard, which non-Muslims may visit while staying out of the prayer hall.
Trips with more action
- El Jem: a Roman amphitheatre about 70 km away, reached by private car or tour, or by changing at Sousse.
- The coast: Sousse and Monastir, about 60 km east, are the places for swimming and sea sports.
- The Sahara: quad biking and camel rides run out of Douz and Tozeur, 300 km or more to the south. Go with a licensed operator, check the current advice, and keep away from Sbeitla and Kasserine, where the UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel.
Tips and essentials
- Heat: summer highs above 40 C are normal, so exercise in the early morning.
- Culture: dress modestly near mosques.
- Getting there: Kairouan has no railway line, so arrive by louage or bus from Tunis (about 126 km) or Sousse.
