Active Things to Do in Varanasi
Varanasi is a flat, ancient city on a wide, slow stretch of the Ganges. It is not a place for rafting, paragliding or climbing; the active side of a visit is boat rides, ghat walks and cycling.
On the River
- Boat Ride: A rowing boat from Assi or Dashashwamedh Ghat is the classic way to see the ghats and temples at sunrise. Do not photograph the burning ghats, and do not swim or bathe in the river, as the water is polluted. All boats stop when the Ganges crosses its warning level, which can happen at short notice from July to September.
On Land
- Walking the Ghats: A slow walk from Assi Ghat north along the river takes in temples, wrestling pits and morning rituals. Manikarnika and Harishchandra are working cremation grounds, so keep away and leave the camera in the bag.
- Cycling: Explore the city’s winding streets and alleys on two wheels. Visit hidden temples, ghats, and local markets while getting some exercise.
Tips and Essentials
- Choose a reputable boatman and agree the fare before you board.
- Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes.
- Don’t forget to carry sunscreen, sunglasses, and a water bottle to stay hydrated.
- Respect the environment and local culture during your adventure.
- Be prepared for variable weather conditions, especially during the monsoon season.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for active days in Varanasi is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and conducive to outdoor activities. Avoid visiting during the peak summer months (April to June) and the monsoon season (July to September).
Getting There
Varanasi is well-connected by air, rail, and road. The city’s airport receives flights from major Indian cities, while its railway station is a major hub. Regular bus services connect Varanasi to nearby cities and towns.
Varanasi rewards travellers who go on foot and by boat, one ghat at a time.
