Adventure Sports in Waitomo

Located on the North Island of New Zealand, Waitomo is an adventure seeker’s destination built around its limestone caves. Most of the thrills are underground, and every cave trip is led by a guide.

Black Water Rafting

  • What is it?: A guided tour that tubes through a cave stream in the dark under glowworms, with waterfall jumps along the way. The Black Labyrinth runs about 3 hours from around NZD 199 (minimum age 12); the Black Abyss adds a 35 m abseil and a zipline and runs about 5 hours from around NZD 332 (minimum age 16). Check the operator for current rates.
  • Tips:
    • Bring swimwear and a towel. Wetsuit, gumboots, helmet and headlight are provided, with hot showers afterwards.
    • Personal cameras, phones and GoPros are not allowed. Guides take photos that you can buy afterwards.
    • The minimum weight is 45 kg and the maximum 130 kg.

Caving

  • What is it?: Venture into the depths of Waitomo’s limestone caves, navigating through narrow passages and marveling at ancient formations.
  • Tips:
    • Wear sturdy shoes with good grip for climbing and crawling.
    • Guides supply helmets and headlamps.
    • Be prepared for some physical activity and tight spaces.
    • Go only with a licensed guide. Hidden vertical shafts (tomos) are common in the farmland above the caves.

Abseiling

  • What is it?: Abseil into a cave shaft with a guide. The Lost World Half Day (minimum age 10, about 4 to 5 hours) starts with a 100 m abseil, and Haggas Honking Holes (minimum age 15) mixes abseils beside waterfalls with climbing.
  • Tips:
    • Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes with good grip.
    • Bring a sense of adventure and bravery!
    • Listen carefully to your guide’s instructions for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Rock Climbing

  • What is it?: Rock climbing in Waitomo happens underground as part of guided cave tours such as Haggas Honking Holes, which has a minimum age of 15 and a minimum weight of 40 kg.
  • Tips:
    • Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes with good grip.
    • Bring plenty of water and snacks to keep your energy up.
    • Helmets, harnesses and hot showers are provided on the tour.

Ziplines

  • What is it?: Waitomo Caves Zipline Park on Te Anga Road, about 200 m past the Glowworm Cave, has 10 ziplines over about 1 km through native trees and over limestone bluffs, taking about 2 hours.
  • Tips:
    • The minimum age is about 7 to 8 and the maximum weight 120 kg. Check the operator for current prices.
    • Wear closed shoes and comfortable clothing.
