Active Options in Wieliczka

Wieliczka is a compact historic town with no outdoor adventure terrain of its own. The active choices are underground or indoors, and bigger outdoor days are a drive away.

Underground

The Wieliczka Salt Mine offers two guided routes. The Miners’ Route starts at the Regis Shaft, runs about 1.9 km to 101 m and takes 2 to 3 hours. Anyone from age 10 gets a helmet, a lamp and a carbon-monoxide absorber and joins a group of up to 20 for simple mining tasks. The Tourist Route has about 800 steps in total.

Tips:

• Book guided tours in advance, especially in peak season.
• Footwear must enclose the entire foot.
• Torches and open flames are not allowed underground, and the guide leads the whole visit.

Indoor climbing

The Solne Miasto recreation centre at ulica Kosciuszki 15 has a climbing wall, a gym and an indoor pool.

Cycling

The Niepolomice Forest, about 15 km north-east, has paved and gravel cycling trails across roughly 110 square kilometres.

Tips:

• Take a car or local bus, about 20 minutes from Wieliczka.
• Bring water and snacks.

Hiking

Ojcow National Park, about 35 km north-west, has a limestone gorge, Lokietek Cave and Pieskowa Skala Castle.

Tips:

• Allow a full day and travel by car.
• Wear sturdy shoes.
