Vespas, Balloons and Chianti Backroads
A vineyard blurs a lot better at 40 km/h on a Vespa than it does through a coach window, and that’s really the whole pitch for adventure touring out of Florence: swap the bus seat for something with an engine, or lose the engine entirely and drift over the hills in a balloon basket at sunrise.
Vintage Vespa convoys through Chianti are the classic version. Small groups ride restored or modern 125cc Vespas along the secondary roads that wind through cypress avenues, dry-stone walls, and olive groves, stopping at medieval hamlets and castle wineries for lunch along the way. Expect to pay roughly 120 to 160 EUR per driver, and bring a valid driver’s license since operators check it before handing over keys. Passengers usually ride along free or at a reduced rate, so this is friendlier for pairs than solo travelers on a tight budget.
Vintage Fiat 500 self-drive convoys are the four-wheeled version of the same idea: a fleet of colorful 1960s manual Fiat 500s driven in a guided line through Fiesole and along the Chianti wine trail, with two-way radios linking every car to a lead guide up front. It suits anyone nervous about balancing on two wheels but still wants the open-road feeling instead of sitting in the back of a minivan.
Hot air ballooning over Tuscany launches from Chianti fields around San Casciano in Val di Pesa, about 20 minutes south of the city. Flights depart at dawn, when the air is stillest, and drift roughly 2,000 feet above the morning mist, medieval castles, and vineyard rows in near silence, landing to a champagne breakfast. Budget 280 to 350 USD per person. Because it’s entirely weather-dependent, flights get rescheduled at short notice, so build a buffer day into your itinerary rather than booking it for your last morning in Tuscany.
Verdict: if you only have time for one of these, take the balloon. A Vespa or Fiat convoy is genuinely fun but still just a scenic drive with extra steps; floating silently over the vineyards at sunrise is the one experience here you can’t approximate on your own with a rental car and a good map.
One concrete tip: for any of these, confirm the meeting point in writing the day before. Pickup points cluster around Santa Maria Novella station and a few hotel lobbies, and a missed 6 a.m. balloon transfer usually can’t be rebooked same-day.
