Chase Sunrise From Lantau's Summit
Most people see Lantau Peak’s summit at noon, tired and sweating in the flat light of midday. The version worth planning a whole trip around starts three and a half hours before sunrise, by headlamp, on a mountain that has no idea you are awake for it.
The Lantau Peak sunrise ascent
Fung Wong Shan, better known as Lantau Peak, tops out at 934 meters, the second-highest point in Hong Kong. The climb starts at the Pak Kung Au trailhead, itself already at 340 meters, and gains roughly 600 vertical meters up steep granite stone steps in the dark, timed so a 3:30am departure puts you on the windswept summit shelter just as dawn breaks over the South China Sea. There is no water tap, shop or toilet anywhere on this ridge, so carry at least two liters of water and wear real hiking boots, not sandals; the exposed rock has zero shade even before sunrise, and it stays that way well into the morning descent.
Wong Lung Hang: the technical alternative
Wong Lung Hang, also called Yellow Dragon Gorge, is a granite stream canyon staged from Tung Chung where climbers scramble boulder fields, work up water-slicked chutes and rappel the Yellow Dragon Waterfall. This is not a rent-a-kayak kind of adventure. It calls for proper rope and rappelling gear, a partner who already knows the route, and dry weather, because the gorge is a genuine flash-flood risk. Water that fell upstream, even a day or two before you arrive, can turn the canyon into a torrent with almost no warning at ground level. Skip it entirely after rain, and skip it outright if scrambling and rappelling are not skills you already have.
Choosing between the two
Lantau Peak asks for fitness and an early alarm clock, nothing more technical than a steep staircase in the dark. Wong Lung Hang asks for rope skills you cannot pick up on the day. Pick the peak if you can hike two hours of stone steps before dawn; pick the canyon only if you already climb elsewhere and are going with someone who has done this specific gorge before.
