Travel advisory: The US government advises against all travel to Myanmar. The UK government advises against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of Mandalay, and against all but essential travel to the rest of Mandalay Region including the city. Conflict, drone attacks, curfews and internet shutdowns are ongoing, and many sites suffered damage in the March 2025 earthquake. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.
Adventure Tours in Mandalay Region
Mandalay Region in central Myanmar has historically drawn visitors to its ancient capitals, hill station and gem markets. No organised adventure tours in the region can be verified, and under current official advice independent excursions are unsuitable.
Places the region is known for
- Mingun lies in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel. Its Hsinbyume Pagoda was largely destroyed in the 2025 earthquake, and the condition and access of the rest of the site are unconfirmed.
- Pyin Oo Lwin is a hill station known for the National Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens. It has been hit by rocket attacks, and its current access is unconfirmed.
- Mogok is known as the “Ruby Land” of Myanmar and its gemstone trade. It lies in a conflict-affected area and is not a destination under current advice.
Practical notes
- Wear light clothing, sturdy shoes and sun protection if conditions ever allow travel.
- Mandalay International Airport was closed for two days in September 2026 after drone attacks on the neighbouring air base, so flight plans may change at short notice.
