Runaway Bay Adventure Tours Guide
The word “adventure tour” in Runaway Bay almost always means a short drive first: the town itself has beach and reef, but the packaged, guide-led combinations that give the word its meaning sit just outside it, in Llandovery, Rio Bueno, and the Saint Ann hill country.
Ten minutes east in Llandovery, Chukka Cove & Cliffs runs the original Chukka Caribbean Adventures estate, founded in 1983, and pairs quad biking through colonial-era ruins with the operator’s signature Horseback Ride ’n’ Swim: a trail ride followed by unsaddling the horses for a bareback swim in the Caribbean, flotation belts provided. The same property runs controlled ocean cliff jumping from natural limestone outcrops into deep coves. Chukka’s own site lists current combo packages if you want to compare the ATV-and-horseback bundle against the cliff-jumping add-on before booking.
Ten minutes the other direction, River Rapids Jamaica runs guided half-day packages on the Rio Bueno, the river marking the St. Ann and Trelawny parish line: jungle tubing or inflatable rafting through Class I and II rapids, a rope swing along the way, and a stop at the operator’s private Bengal Beach where the river meets the sea. Life jackets and helmets are mandatory and included.
The longer haul is Nine Mile, about an hour south into the Saint Ann interior via Brown’s Town and Alexandria, where Bob Marley was born and is buried beside his half-brother Anthony Booker. A resident Rastafarian guide leads visitors through the two-room childhood home, the “Mount Zion Rock,” and the marble mausoleum, where shoes come off and photography is banned outright. Gate admission alone runs about US$30; a packaged tour from a Runaway Bay resort, transport and guide included, typically runs US$90 to $130. Book the Nine Mile day tour rather than attempting the winding mountain road solo; it is narrow and steep enough that a local driver genuinely earns the fare.
Ocho Rios, 25 kilometers east, supplies the other packaged staple: a Dunn’s River Falls climb bundled with the Blue Hole’s rope swings and rainforest sinkholes, sold as a single day trip with round-trip transport from Runaway Bay. Compare the Dunn’s River and Ocho Rios day tour against booking the falls alone if shopping time in Ocho Rios does not interest you.
None of these are self-guided. The A1 highway is fast and narrow-shouldered, driving is on the left, and the mountain roads to Nine Mile carry almost no signage; every operator here bundles transport for a reason, not just to upsell it. Jamaica’s tourist board maintains the current list of licensed operators if you want to verify a company beyond the ones named here.
Verdict: if only one tour fits the trip, make it Chukka Cove over Nine Mile unless the Marley pilgrimage specifically matters to you, since Chukka packs three distinct activities (ATV, horseback, cliff jump) into one closer booking with far less mountain-road driving involved.

Book the Nine Mile and Chukka slots at least a day ahead in high season, mid-December to mid-April; both fill fast from cruise-day crowds diverted up from Ocho Rios and Falmouth.
