Ljubljana Attractions by Budget Tier
Ljubljana Attractions, Ranked by Cost
Ljubljana’s best attraction costs nothing. The Old Town squares, the Plečnik bridges and the path up Castle Hill are all free, so a tight budget barely limits a first visit. The list below runs from zero to about €60.
Free (€0)
- The pedestrian streets of Mestni trg, Stari trg and Gornji trg, with Robba Fountain outside Town Hall.
- Triple Bridge, Dragon Bridge and Butcher’s Bridge, where the railings hold love padlocks.
- The covered market colonnade along the river.
- The woodland trail up Castle Hill, 10 to 15 minutes from the Old Town.
- Tivoli Park and its Jakopič Promenade.
The sightseeing page maps these free stops in order.
Up to €10
The castle funicular is €3.30 one way or €6 return. A single LPP bus ride is €1.50. The Žaba river boat is about €10 for adults and €5 for children aged 4 to 12, and it is the cheapest way onto the water. See river cruise listings for other operators.
Plečnik House in Trnovo is about €9 for adults and €18 for a family. Entry is by guided visit only, with a start every full hour, Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. It is closed on Mondays, so check the City Museum of Ljubljana site before you walk out there.
The Museum of Illusions at Kongresni trg 13 is about €9.95 for adults.
€10 to €35
- National Gallery of Slovenia: €10 adults, €5 students.
- Ljubljana Castle: €13.50 online or €15 at the desk without the funicular, and €17.10 or €19 with it. Prices are on the castle ticket page .
- Wooden boat cruise: about €15.82 for adults, €8.44 for children.
- House of Experiments: about €11 for adults, at Trubarjeva cesta 39.
- Postojna Cave alone: €34.90 at peak times, 46 km from the city.
€40 and above
The 48-hour Ljubljana Card is €49 and the 72-hour card is €54. Both cover castle entry, a river cruise, a guided city tour, city buses, the National Gallery and the Chocolarium, with one visit to each. The 24-hour card is €41. Children aged 6 to 14 pay €26, €31 or €35. The Visit Ljubljana card page has the full list.
Postojna’s “Two Adventures” ticket adds Predjama Castle, which is built into a 123-metre cliff face, and costs €49.90 to €58.90. The “100% Cave Experience” is €44.40 to €60.50, and the Postojna Cave Park site shows which date falls in which band. If you would rather leave the driving to someone else, browse Postojna tours that include transport.
A full-day minibus trip covering Bled, Bohinj and Vintgar Gorge runs about €65 to €95 per person. Dinner at Strelec, the castle’s one-Michelin-star restaurant in the Archers’ Tower, is the splurge of the city.
Three sample days
A €0 day is the Old Town, the bridges, the castle path and Tivoli Park. A day at about €25 adds the online castle ticket and a Žaba ride. A day at about €60 swaps those for Postojna’s cave and castle package, or for the 24-hour card and the wooden boat.
Money-saving habits
Buy castle tickets online, since the web price is €1.50 lower without the funicular and €1.90 lower with it. Walk up Castle Hill and ride the funicular only on the way down, which makes a €3.30 one-way ticket do the work of a return. Children’s fares apply on most boats and at the castle, where concession is €10.50. A family castle ticket is €36, or €46 with the funicular, and that beats three single tickets.
Where the money is best spent
Spend on the boat and the castle, and keep everything else free. The castle’s online discount and a Žaba ride together cost under €25 and cover two of the best views in the city. Add Postojna only if you have a spare day and a warm jacket, since the cave stays at 10°C.
