Attraction Tours Mandalay Region
Travel advisory: Washington advises Americans not to travel to Myanmar for any reason, while the UK government advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay and against all travel to Sagaing Region and the townships north of the city. Armed conflict, drone strikes, curfews and communications blackouts are ongoing, and the March 2025 earthquake damaged many historic sites. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.
Attractions in Mandalay Region
Mandalay Region holds several ancient capitals and religious sites that visitors historically toured from Mandalay city. No attraction in the region can currently be confirmed open, and organised tours cannot be verified.
Mingun
Mingun is about 11 km from Mandalay, in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel. It is known for the unfinished Pahtodawgyi, begun in the 18th century, which is damaged and closed to climbing. Hsinbyume Pagoda was largely destroyed in the 2025 earthquake.
Amarapura
Amarapura is about 7 km from Mandalay and was a royal capital from 1783. It is known for U Bein Bridge, a long teak footbridge across Taungthaman Lake. The bridge was included in post-earthquake surveys, and its current condition and access are unconfirmed.
Sagaing Hill
Sagaing Hill is about 20 km from Mandalay and is known for its many monasteries and pagodas. It lies in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel. The Soon U Ponnya Shin pagoda was damaged in the earthquake, and access is unconfirmed.
Practical notes
- Cover shoulders and knees at temples and monasteries.
- Remove shoes and socks before entering religious buildings and avoid pointing the feet at people or images.
- Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection.
- Checkpoints are common, so carry a passport.
