Naples Attractions Through the Year
Naples runs on a calendar. The Vesuvius trail changes its hours month by month, Pompeii swaps slot systems in mid October, and one patron saint liquefies his blood on three separate dates. Pick the season first and the attractions sort themselves.
Spring: the courtyards open
May brings the Maggio dei Monumenti, a month of free guided visits that opens private courtyards, crypts and palaces. The Duomo’s blood-liquefaction ceremony for San Gennaro falls on the Saturday before the first Sunday of May, which is not always the first Saturday. The nave is free to enter.
The Vesuvius Gran Cono trail runs 9:00 to 17:00 from April to June. Tickets are EUR10, or EUR8 for under 25s, plus a booking fee. They are sold online only and are released up to 30 days ahead, so book as soon as your dates are fixed on the Vesuvius park page .
Summer: start early
From 16 March to 14 October Pompeii sells two entry windows: 9:00 to 13:00 (up to 15,000 people) and 13:00 to 17:30 (up to 5,000). Daily numbers are capped at 20,000 and every ticket carries a name. Express costs EUR20, Pompeii+ EUR25 and the 3-day pass EUR30. Choose the morning window and carry water, as shade is scarce. Buy through Pompeii’s official ticket page , or compare Pompeii tours with an archaeologist on GetYourGuide if you want context at the ruins.
Herculaneum is open 8:30 to 19:30 until 14 October, and the Vesuvius trail runs to 18:00 in July and August. When the sun peaks, switch to Napoli Sotterranea, where tours leave hourly from 10:00 to 18:00 at Piazza San Gaetano 69. Expect to pay about EUR12 to EUR15 and to climb down 136 steps, 40 metres below the street.
Autumn: the easy months
September and October are the comfortable stretch. The Festa di San Gennaro ceremony is on 19 September. From 15 October Herculaneum closes at 17:00 with last entry at 15:30. Pompeii’s winter hours are 9:00 to 17:00, last entry 15:30. In October the Vesuvius trail runs 9:00 to 16:00.
The first Sunday of each month is free at Pompeii, Herculaneum and MANN. That is good value but also the busiest day, and MANN’s free tickets cannot be pre-booked. For a combined Herculaneum and Vesuvius day, search Viator for those tours .
Winter: short days, quiet sites
From November to February the Vesuvius trail runs 9:00 to 15:00, and it closes with automatic refunds when an orange weather alert is issued. The Duomo ceremony returns on 16 December. The artisans of San Gregorio Armeno make nativity figures all year, but the lane is liveliest in December. Pompeii closes on 25 December and 1 January, Herculaneum on 25 December.
Indoor anchors keep their usual hours. The Sansevero chapel opens 9:00 to 19:00 daily except Tuesday, and MANN opens 9:00 to 19:30, closed Tuesday. Capri’s Blue Grotto is normally shut in winter, and sea conditions can cancel it in any season, so treat the island as a spring-to-autumn plan. Amalfi Coast ferries start about mid May, and in winter only the Sorrento to Naples route runs.
One tip per season
Spring: book the Vesuvius slot first. Summer: buy the morning Pompeii window. Autumn: check the 15 October hours change. Winter: build the day around a museum and a late lunch. For the city-centre pieces, the page on sightseeing in Naples lays out a route.
