Touring Rio de Janeiro's Top Sights
Rio does not hide its icons behind velvet ropes. Its best venue tours put you inside the locker room, on the tram tracks, or standing on an imperial pier, and most of them are built to be walked through, not just photographed.
Step onto the Maracanã pitch
Tour Maracanã runs daily from 09:00 to 16:30, last entry 16:00, with entry from Portão A on Av. Presidente Castelo Branco, right by the Maracanã metro and SuperVia station. Match days shorten the window: tours can close three to five hours before kickoff, so check the fixture list before you plan your visit. The route runs through the locker rooms, the warm-up room, the players’ tunnel and the pitch-side bench, ending in a museum full of Garrincha, Pelé and Zico memorabilia. A self-guided ticket runs R$75 for adults and R$37.50 for students, seniors and under-21s; a guided tour in Portuguese, English or Spanish runs R$90 and R$45. Full match-day closures and the current schedule are posted on the official Tour Maracanã site .

Ride the Bondinho de Santa Teresa
The historic tram leaves from Estação Carioca, beside the Petrobras building and the Carioca metro stop, and crosses the top of the 18th-century Arcos da Lapa aqueduct on its way up to Santa Teresa. It runs Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:30 and weekends 09:00 to 16:00, departures every 20 to 30 minutes. A round-trip ticket costs R$20, sold only at the Carioca ticket window for cash, debit or Pix. The cars are open-sided, so keep your phone and bag tucked in, especially when the tram slows at intersections.
Catch a free Tuesday at Museu do Amanhã
Praça Mauá’s Museum of Tomorrow, reachable by VLT to Parada dos Museus, opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:00, and is closed Mondays. Standard adult admission is R$30 and the half-price rate is R$15, but every Tuesday the museum is free for everyone, provided you reserve a timed online slot in advance through the official Museu do Amanhã site , released the Monday before. Pair it with the Museu de Arte do Rio directly across the square, which shares the free-Tuesday policy and is also free on the last Sunday of every month; a combo ticket for both runs around R$40.

Cross the bay to Ilha Fiscal
The green neo-Gothic palace on its own islet in Guanabara Bay hosted the last imperial ball of the Brazilian monarchy on the night of November 9, 1889, six days before the Republic was declared. The Brazilian Navy runs the tour Thursday to Sunday, with departures by naval tender at 12:45, 14:15 and 15:30 from the pier at the Espaço Cultural da Marinha, Praça XV. Tickets are R$50 for adults and R$25 half-price, sold from the ticket office at Praça XV from 11:00.
Before you set out
Book Maracanã and Ilha Fiscal ahead of arrival if your dates are fixed: both run on limited daily departures. If ticketed venue tours are only half your itinerary, add the free overlooks and self-guided routes covered in the sightseeing guide , or plan the whole day around one neighborhood with the walking tours guide . Skip any product marketed as an official municipal city pass: Riotur does not run one, and the private bundles sold under names like “Rio de Janeiro Pass” are usually pricier than booking each venue directly.
