Sofia Attraction Tours: What to Book
Sofia’s paid attractions punch far above their price tags. Where a Western European opera house or a communist-era history exhibit can run you 80 euros or more, here the same experience often costs a third of that. Three are worth building an afternoon or evening around.
An opera or ballet at the Sofia National Opera
The Sofia Opera and Ballet on ul. Vrabcha 1 stages Verdi, Puccini, and even Wagner’s Ring Cycle with genuinely world-class Bulgarian voices, and tickets typically run 10 to 30 euros depending on seat and production. Dress smart casual at minimum. Search current Sofia opera and theater tickets to see what is on stage during your visit.
The Red Flat, a preserved 1980s apartment
Collect your ticket at Gifted Sofia on ul. Ivan Denkoglu 24, then walk to the nearby flat itself, a meticulously restored residential apartment recreating daily life for an average family under Todor Zhivkov’s regime. Sit on the retro furniture, open the cupboards, and play the vinyl records while a 90-minute audio guide, available in English, French, German, and Spanish, walks you through Cold War consumer life. Admission runs about 9.20 euros for adults and 4.60 euros for children under 14. It is not wheelchair accessible, so plan accordingly.
Book The Red Flat and other Sofia city experiences if you want the visit paired with a wider Cold War walking route.
A guided flight through indigenous Bulgarian wine
Specialized enotecas such as Vino Orenda on bul. Makedoniya 50A and Tempus Vini Wine Point pour structured tastings built around grapes you will not find on a typical European wine list: the rich, tannic red Mavrud, the spicy Shiroka Melnishka (a favorite of Winston Churchill, by local legend), the Nebbiolo-Syrah cross Rubin, and the whites Dimyat and Misket. A flight generally costs 13 to 23 euros.
Booking and logistics
All three attractions sell out their best evening slots in peak season, so book a day or two ahead rather than walking up. Every price quoted here is in euros: Bulgaria’s currency switched over on 1 January 2026. Check Sofia Metro fares if you are combining any of these with a cross-town trip, since a single Ticket 30+ covers most transfers within 30 minutes for 0.80 euros.
For the archaeological and religious sights that sit alongside these three, pair these tours with the Sofia sightseeing guide and, if you are short on time, the 2-day Sofia itinerary .
