Ride Chengdu's Panda Express Bus Circuit
Skip the taxi haggling. Chengdu’s bus network will get you to a hillside of pandas or a river-carved Buddha for less than the price of a coffee back home.
Panda Express: the cheapest ticket to the pandas
The most useful bus in the city might be the direct shuttle running from Chunxi Road and Kuanzhai Alley straight to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, covering the trip in 35 to 45 minutes for around ¥10 to ¥15. It skips the transfers of a regular metro-plus-taxi route entirely, which matters a lot if you are chasing the pandas’ early morning feeding window before they nap through the heat.
The open-top double-decker loop
A hop-on hop-off double-decker links Wuhou Shrine, Jinli Ancient Street, Tianfu Square, Kuanzhai Alley, and Wenshu Monastery in one loop, with multilingual audio commentary running the whole route. Climb to the open top deck for elevated views over the old city rooftops, and treat it as an orientation ride on your first day rather than a one-and-done sightseeing trip.
Day coach to Leshan and Emei
For the Giant Buddha and Mount Emei, full-day air-conditioned coaches run down the G0512 expressway from central Chengdu hotels, with a bilingual guide, a river boat cruise ticket to see the 71-meter Buddha from the water, and a return transfer bundled in for somewhere between $45 and $65. It is the easiest way to see both sites without juggling train transfers and ticket lines on your own.
Chunxi Road: the hub to know
Chunxi Road doubles as the central staging point for regional shuttles heading out to Dujiangyan, the Sanxingdui Archaeological Museum, and Mount Qingcheng. If you are not sure where a particular day-trip bus departs from, start your search here.
Booking and riding tips
Book ahead in peak season, since the Leshan and Emei coaches fill up fast on weekends. Bring sunscreen and a hat for the double-decker’s open top, and don’t expect much English commentary on the cheaper city routes, only the tourist-specific loops and paid day coaches offer it.
