Bus Tours Mandalay Region
Travel advisory: The US advises against all travel to Myanmar. The UK advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay, and against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of Mandalay city. Conflict, drone attacks, curfews and internet cut-offs persist, and the March 2025 earthquake left many of the area’s sites damaged. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.
Bus Tours in Mandalay Region
Group bus tours around Mandalay Region were historically a way to see the main sights in a day. No tour operators can currently be verified, and no attraction can be confirmed open. Roads north of Mandalay city lie in areas where the UK advises against all travel.
Routes that were once common
- A Mandalay city circuit covering the Royal Palace, Shwenandaw Monastery and Kuthodaw Pagoda. The palace was damaged in the 2025 earthquake, Kuthodaw suffered serious structural damage, and access to all three is unconfirmed.
- A day trip to Mingun, Inwa and Sagaing Hill. Mingun and Sagaing lie in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel. Hsinbyume Pagoda at Mingun was largely destroyed, and Inwa lost most of its historic structures, with the Maha Aungmye Bonzan (Me Nu) nearly destroyed.
Practical notes
- Dress modestly at temples and monasteries and remove shoes before entering.
- Ask permission before photographing monks.
- Carry limited cash, since many ATMs reject foreign cards.
- Checkpoints are common, so carry a passport.
