Georgetown, Guyana, will not read as a couples’ destination the way Barbados or St. Lucia does, and it should not; what it offers instead is a handful of genuinely exceptional evenings built around food, rum and the Demerara River.

Chef Delven Adams runs a reservation-only, no-fixed-menu dinner from the backyard of his family home, a speakeasy-style multi-course meal of wild-caught snapper, slow-cooked pepperpot and cassava bread that earned the Backyard Cafe a spot on TIME’s 2026 list of the World’s Greatest Places. It sits in West Ruimveldt, one of five neighborhoods (alongside Tiger Bay, Albouystown, Agricola and Sophia) named in current government travel advisories for crime. That is not a reason to skip it: book a pre-arranged hotel taxi directly to and from the door, since this is a private home reached by car, not somewhere to walk to, and the meal itself is as safe as any restaurant once you’re inside.

Verdict: build the trip around one splurge dinner, the Backyard Cafe if you can get a reservation, or the Bottle Restaurant if you can’t, and treat the sunset cruise as the lower-effort second night.
