A Ger Stove and a Steppe Sunset
The best evening you’ll spend as a couple in Kharkhorin doesn’t involve a restaurant reservation. It involves a felt tent, an iron stove, and more stars than either of you have probably seen in one sky before.
The ger stove is the whole date
Book a private ger at an established camp such as Munkh Tenger Ger Camp, Anar Ger Camp or Secret of the Silk Road, and the evening builds itself: camp staff light the central stove with larch wood as the sun goes down, and the felt walls hold that warmth long after the temperature outside drops toward single digits. There’s no bar, no music, no lit-up dining room, just two of you, a fire, and the kind of dark sky that swallows the Milky Way whole.
Chase the sunset first
Before dinner, climb the hill to the Monument to Nomadic Empires while there’s still light: the same golden hour that lights up the Khangai Mountains also catches the Orkhon River winding below and the 108 white stupas of Erdene Zuu in the distance. A sunset horseback ride along the river, through meadows scattered with wild sage and edelweiss, does something similar at ground level instead of from a hilltop, and it costs far less than most guided rides back in the capital.
Worth the extra drive
Tsenkher Hot Springs, about two and a half hours west, turns a day trip into a proper soak under the stars if the timing works out, mineral pools piped into wooden bathing tubs surrounded by forested hills. It’s a full excursion rather than an afternoon add-on, so plan an early start if you want to be back at your own camp by dinner.

Confirm the camp’s ger actually has its own heated stove when you book, not every one on a shared property does.
