São Miguel is only 65 kilometers long, yet trying to see all of it in a single day is the fastest way to ruin a day trip. Pick one loop and let the island do the rest of the work.
Loop 1: Sete Cidades and the west coast
Start at Miradouro da Vista do Rei for the classic panorama over Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, then walk the ridge to Miradouro da Boca do Inferno for the same twin lakes from a sharper angle. If you’re staying near Horta on Faial, the 30-minute Atlântico Line ferry to Madalena on Pico turns into a full day trip of its own: the UNESCO-listed Criação Velha vineyards, grown inside black basalt stone pens, and the Gruta das Torres lava tube are both an easy loop from the dock.
Verdict: the Sete Cidades loop is the one to prioritize if you only get a single day on São Miguel. It’s the single route that captures the caldera lakes, the coast, and a hot spring in one drive.

Check the tide table for Ponta da Ferraria the night before, not the morning of. Low tide windows can fall at inconvenient hours, and building your loop around that time is far easier when you already know it.
