Four places genuinely fit into a single day out of Budapest; a fifth, further out, rewards a slower trip instead.
Szentendre, 40 Minutes Away
The HÉV H5 line runs from Batthyány tér to this walkable artists’ town in about 40 minutes. The Main Square, the Szentendre Island riverside, and the still-open Szabó-Szamos Marzipan Museum fill a relaxed half-day without an early start.
Esztergom, the Royal City
About 45km and 1.5 hours by car or train, Esztergom Basilica dominates the skyline, and the Hungarian Museum of Christianity and the Danube-Ipoly National Park round out a fuller day if paired with a short hike.
Lake Balaton, in Season
Around 100km and 2 hours by car, Central Europe’s largest lake works as a day trip for swimming and lakeside towns like Tihany and Balatonfüred, best kept to the summer months.
Eger, at the Edge of a Day Trip
At roughly 1 hour 50 minutes by direct train from Keleti, Eger Castle and the Valley of Beautiful Women wine-cellar row (Szépasszony-völgy) make for a full day, though the wine tasting alone is worth returning for with a night booked. Tokaj, Given a Night Instead
At 200km and about three hours each way by car, Tokaj’s wine cellars and the Bodrog River are worth a night rather than a single rushed day. The multi-day trips guide covers it properly as an overnight.
Getting There and Paying for It
Trains and buses connect all of the above; renting a car or booking a private transfer works too. Search Danube Bend day trips on GetYourGuide covers several of these guided. Pay in forint rather than euro: even where a shop nominally takes euros, the exchange rate offered runs worse than paying in HUF. From the airport, Főtaxi is the official taxi partner at a fixed fare of roughly 10,000 to 13,000 HUF, cheaper and safer than a tout in the arrivals hall. MÁV’s own site sells tickets for every route above.
Esztergom’s basilica dome, Hungary’s largest, is climbable for a further fee and worth it for the view over the river bend below. Siófok and Tihany both make good Balaton stops if swimming isn’t the only draw, one lively and one quieter. Buses cover the same routes as the trains above for a lower fare, though with a longer ride on the Eger and Balaton legs specifically.
