Day Trips From Gansbaai by Car
Day trips from Gansbaai suit different moods, so this page sorts them by purpose rather than by distance. Roads in the area are the R43 and the N2, and a full tank is wise before any of them. Do not drive after dark, and plan to be home by late afternoon.
For a Town and a Wine Valley: Hermanus
Hermanus is the easy one. It lies 40 to 45 km up the R43, a drive that takes about 40 minutes. Walk the cliff path, look around the Old Harbour and, if you have time, carry on to the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley beyond the town. Marine Dynamics sells shuttles in the other direction, from Hermanus to Kleinbaai at R700 per person, which helps anyone basing themselves there for a boat trip.
For Cheese and a Quiet Lunch: Stanford
Stanford is a small village on the Klein River, known for wine and cheese. It sits north of Gansbaai and works as a slow half day with a long lunch.
For Flowers and Art: Grootbos
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is on the R43 between Stanford and Gansbaai, so you can pass it on the way to or from Hermanus. Visits are by booked tour. The Florilegium Half Day Tour costs R1,950 per person for international guests and R1,250 for South African residents, lasts about 4.5 hours and runs Wednesday to Sunday. Guests must be 12 or older, groups are limited to 10 and booking ahead is essential.
For the End of Africa: Cape Agulhas
Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of the continent, is about 110 km from Gansbaai, or 2 hours on sealed roads. Count 4 hours of driving for the round trip and leave early. A new lighthouse precinct opened there in April 2026, with an interpretation centre, a 1 km boardwalk and the Needles Restaurant, and the 1848 lighthouse stands beside it. Ask SANParks for the lighthouse entry fee and opening times before you leave.
For Mission-Village History: Elim
Elim was founded in 1824 as a Moravian mission. The church still owns the village, and it is protected as a heritage village. From the Gansbaai side the route goes by gravel, through Baardskeerdersbos, and is much slower than the tar road to Agulhas. Ask about road conditions before setting off, and do not count on a quick drive.
A Trip Not to Squeeze In
De Hoop Nature Reserve lies along a long route that is partly gravel. It belongs in its own plan, not as a stop in a Gansbaai day.
Choosing One
If you want an easy day, take Hermanus. If you want scenery and a booked activity, take Grootbos. If you want a long drive with a clear goal, take Agulhas. Combining Hermanus with Stanford and Grootbos is realistic. Pairing Agulhas with anything else is not.
