Most people who see Hegra never spend a night anywhere near it. They ride in from another city, walk the tomb clusters for a few hours, and ride out again before dark.
Coming From Elsewhere in Saudi Arabia
Medina is the busiest corridor: about 330km and 3.5 to 4 hours south via Route 375 and 328, with operators typically leaving Medina hotels around 6:30am and returning late evening after covering Hegra, Dadan, and AlUla Old Town in one push. From Tabuk it’s roughly 340km and 3.5 hours on Route 80 and 375. Travellers based on the Red Sea coast can also make the trip inland: Umluj to Hegra runs about 220km (2.5 hours), Yanbu about 350km (3.5 hours). Heading Out From an AlUla Base
If you’re staying in AlUla rather than day-tripping in, the outward excursions run the other direction. Wadi Al Disah, a 15km sandstone canyon with freshwater streams and Nabataean rock inscriptions, sits about 200km (2.5 hours) northwest and needs a high-clearance 4x4. Tayma Oasis, roughly 110km (1.5 hours) northeast, centers on the 3,500 year old Bir Haddaj well and the Qasr Al-Hamra palace ruins. Khaybar’s volcanic oasis, about 200km (2.5 hours) southeast, mixes black basalt lava fields with Neolithic stone mustatil enclosures. The Part People Miss
Hegra itself only takes half a day to see properly. Before You Book
A long day trip is a different proposition in summer: from May to September, daytime highs above 40C turn even the shorter Hegra walking circuits into a hot, tiring add-on to an already long drive, so November through March suits a single-day round trip far better. If you’re coming from Medina or Tabuk, confirm your day-tour pickup time against your hotel checkout, since a 6:30am departure after a late Haramain rail connection the night before is a rough start. Reserve the RCU coach seat as early as you can once your dates are fixed; it fills up faster than the drive time would suggest.
