Easy Excursions from Houmt Souk
How you travel shapes which excursions from Houmt Souk make sense. The island is flat and small, so bicycles and metered taxis open up the nearby villages, boats go out to the lagoon, and a licensed operator is the best way to reach the south. This guide groups the options by transport.
By taxi or bicycle
Erriadh, about 8 km. The village is a 10-minute taxi ride and a manageable bicycle ride on flat roads. It is the setting for Djerbahood, a street-art project with about 250 murals by more than 150 artists, shown in editions from 2014 and 2021. A few works have weathered. The El Ghriba synagogue stands in the village and remains a living place of worship and pilgrimage. The attack of May 2023 left five dead, and the site operates under tight security. Plan for checkpoints, cover your shoulders and knees, and bring a head covering. There is no confirmed visiting schedule, so check on the day.
Midoun, about 15 km. The market town leads to the east-coast beaches. Beach conditions differ, so look for flags and ask locally. Even where a lifeguard is on duty, supervise swimmers.
Guellala, about 20 km. This is a ride for a taxi or an early-morning cyclist rather than a walk. Potters work with clay from nearby quarries, and the village museum has life-sized scenes of traditional ceremonies and olive oil making.
By boat
Ras Rmel, the sandspit often sold as Flamingo Island, is reached from the Houmt Souk port or marina. Operators sail for 30 to 60 minutes and sell packages of about six hours with lunch. Between October and May flamingos feed on the flats, but nobody can promise a sighting. Swimming conditions, lifeguards and calm water are not part of the offer.
By road and ferry to the mainland
The Roman causeway at El Kantara, about 7 km long, and the Ajim-Jorf ferry link Djerba to the mainland. The ferry can queue badly in rough weather, so allow spare time for the return.
- Zarzis, about 50 km. The nearest mainland town.
- Tataouine area, 130 to 145 km one way. Ksar Hadada, Chenini and Douiret make a full day with a licensed operator. Louages from the Houmt Souk station also serve Tataouine, Zarzis, Medenine and Gabes.
- What to avoid. The FCDO warns against travel in the Libya border band, including Ben Guerdane, Remada and Dehiba. Keep any mainland plan well clear of them.
What does not work as a day trip
El Djem is roughly 300 km from the island. Sousse, Monastir, Hammamet and Cap Bon lie farther north still and need a separate trip.
Day-trip checklist
- Water and sun protection, since summer heat is severe.
- Tunisian dinars (TND) in cash.
- A metered taxi with the meter running, or an agreed price.
- An early start.
Compare organised excursions on Viator . The FCDO advice lists the regional warnings, and the Djerbahood website has details of the murals.
