Day Trips From Kyoto, Ranked by Time
Sorted by how long it takes to get there rather than by how famous the destination is, here’s what a day trip from Kyoto Station actually costs in time and yen.
20 to 22 minutes: Uji
The JR Nara Line reaches Uji for roughly 240 yen, the cheapest of Kyoto’s classic gateway trips. Byodo-in’s general admission runs 700 yen for the garden and Hoshokan Museum, plus 300 yen more for the timed Phoenix Hall interior viewing, which sells out by midday on weekends and during sakura season with no advance booking available. A train ticket, the garden, and a matcha tasting can still come in under 2,000 yen total.
28 to 30 minutes: Osaka
JR Special Rapid covers the distance for 580 yen. A full day comfortably fits Osaka Castle, Dotonbori and the Umeda Sky Building, with a same-evening return to Kyoto.
About 30 minutes, then a hike: Kurama to Kibune
Eizan Railway from Demachiyanagi Station reaches Kurama in about 30 minutes. From there, an easy 2 to 3 hour, roughly 3.9km hike crosses the ridge to the riverside village of Kibune, home to platform dining directly over the river each May through September that books out at the better restaurants.
35 to 45 minutes: Nara
JR’s rapid service takes about 45 minutes for 720 yen; Kintetsu’s limited express is faster at 35 minutes for around 1,280 yen and lands closer to the deer park. Todai-ji’s Great Buddha Hall now costs 800 yen, not the 600 yen figure that’s stale since April 2024, and deer crackers run 200 yen a pack rather than 150, both confirmed on Nara’s tourism site . About an hour: Ohara
Kyoto Bus 17 runs direct from the station for 630 yen. Sanzen-in Temple, the valley’s moss-garden centerpiece, costs 700 yen adult, open 9am to 5pm March through October per the temple’s own site . Compare guided Ohara day trips if the bus transfer isn’t worth working out solo.
55 to 95 minutes: Himeji
Shinkansen covers it in about 55 minutes for roughly 4,740 yen, or JR Special Rapid takes 90 to 95 minutes for 2,210 yen. Non-resident admission rose to 2,500 yen on 1 March 2026, residents still pay 1,000 yen, and anyone under 18 gets in free. Notice what isn’t here: Arashiyama, at 11 to 16 minutes by JR, is a city district, not a gateway trip, and belongs with the temples and walking routes instead. Go to Ohara once Nara starts to feel like everyone else’s itinerary too.
