Maldives Day Trips by Time of Year
Which Day Trip Fits the Season
A Maldives day trip always starts with a boat, since there is no road out of a resort island, but which trip makes sense changes with the calendar more than most visitors expect.
Year-round: whale sharks off South Ari Atoll
South Ari Atoll’s Marine Protected Area holds resident juvenile whale sharks on the outer reef through all 12 months of the year, and a half-day snorkel trip out of Maafushi, Dhigurah, or Dhangethi runs roughly $85 to $150 per person. Because sightings hold steady across seasons, this is the one day trip worth booking regardless of when you land.
May through November: manta season at Hanifaru Bay
From roughly May or June through November, Baa Atoll’s Hanifaru Bay hosts one of the world’s largest seasonal manta feeding gatherings. Entry runs only in permit-controlled snorkel rotations of about 45 minutes under ranger supervision, with motorized craft banned from the bay to keep the aggregation calm. A bundled excursion covering the boat, guide, and park permit typically runs $125 to $175 per person; the standalone conservation permit fee alone is a smaller figure, so ask a quote to state plainly whether it includes the boat. Reserve a Hanifaru Bay manta trip once your travel dates fall inside the season, since it does not run at all the rest of the year.
December through April: calmer seas for a sandbank day
The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December through April, brings the calmest water for a half-day sandbank trip: a speedboat drop-off with mask, fins, and a packed lunch, typically $40 to $65 per person and open to complete beginners. It is easiest to book on short notice from a local island guesthouse during these months, when a rough afternoon crossing is less likely to cancel the plan.
Any month: a resort day pass from a local island
Staying on Maafushi or a similar local island does not rule out a resort experience in any season. Several nearby resorts sell day passes, usually $95 to $180 per person, bundling the speedboat transfer with pool, beach, and lunch-buffet access, a trip that runs the same in July as it does in January.
The one clock that never changes
Whatever the season, seaplane transfers fly daylight hours only, roughly 06:00 to 16:30, so a day trip built around one still needs to return well before dusk. On a local island, alcohol stays off the itinerary for the whole day regardless of month, since it is not sold on land outside resorts.
Book the South Ari whale shark snorkel as a year-round option, and check the Maldives tourism board and the Hanifaru Bay dive-site notes for exact season dates before locking in a manta trip. For the fuller activities list beyond a single day out, start there before narrowing down.
