Sri Lanka Day Trips: Hills, Ruins, Coast

Sri Lanka is small, but each region has its own weather, so choose the day trip by region first and by calendar second.

Hill country

Weather here turns wet during the southwest monsoon, May to September, and again in the inter-monsoon rain of October to December. Start early whatever the month.

  • Horton Plains. The park opens at 06:00 and its 9.5 km World’s End loop is best finished before the mist rolls in around 09:30. The 880 m drop is the point of the walk.
  • Kandy from Colombo. Allow about 3.5 hours by car. Add the Peradeniya botanical gardens and an evening Kandyan dance show. The Tooth Temple costs LKR 3,000 for foreigners and opens 05:30 to 20:00.
  • Nuwara Eliya and Ella. Reach Nanu Oya by road, then ride the scenic train on to Ella and Badulla. Services on the line have changed in recent months, so check Sri Lanka Railways before you plan around a timetable.

Cultural Triangle

The wetter months here run October to February, so mornings are the safest hours.

  • Pidurangala and Dambulla. Climb at 05:00 for sunrise on Sigiriya’s rock face, then drive about 30 minutes to the caves.
  • Minneriya and Kaudulla. A late-afternoon jeep ride, about an hour from Sigiriya, reaches the elephant gathering that peaks from August to October. Herds of up to roughly 300 gather on the reservoir grass.
  • Polonnaruwa. A US$30 foreign ticket covers the Quadrangle and Gal Vihara, and a bicycle suits the flat ground.

South and west coast

The dry, calm season is November to April, which is also when whales are offshore.

  • Mirissa whale watching. Boats leave at dawn from November to April, with the best odds from December to March. Choose a licensed operator that keeps its distance and does not chase.
  • Galle Fort. A drive from Colombo along the coast, or a 2nd-class train seat at LKR 200 to 400. Walk the free ramparts near sunset.
  • Weligama. Pair a morning boat with an afternoon beginner surf lesson.

East coast

From May to September the east is dry. Pigeon Island National Park off Trincomalee has shallow coral, blacktip reef sharks and turtles for snorkellers.

Practical notes

  • Many day trips mean 2 to 4 hours of driving, so hire a car with a driver rather than relying on buses.
  • Udawalawe has the Elephant Transit Home, run by the wildlife department, as the humane alternative to Pinnawala, which draws welfare criticism.
