Epic Day Trips From Surat Thani
Two of this province’s best day trips go in completely opposite directions, one out to sea toward 42 uninhabited islands, the other inland to an 8th-century pagoda, and both are doable from the same base in a single day each.
Mu Ko Ang Thong Marine Park
A full-day speedboat or wooden tour boat run from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Donsak covers the 42-island Ang Thong archipelago: a timber stairway climb on Koh Mae Ko to the ridge viewpoint over Talay Nai, the landlocked jade-green Emerald Lake, snorkeling over coral, and, for anyone up for the 500-meter climb, the summit viewpoint on Koh Wua Talap for a panorama of the whole chain. Expect to pay roughly $55 to $80 per person, on top of the 300 THB park entry fee.
Cheow Lan Lake karst cruise
From Surat Thani city or Khao Sok village, day boats head to Ratchaprapha Dam pier, then out by longtail through the Khao Sam Kloe karst spires, known locally as the Three Brothers, with a swim stop in the warm lake water, lunch on a floating raft house, and a guided walk to Pakarang Cave. Figure $60 to $85 per person for the day.
Chaiya: Srivijaya heritage on the mainland
About 50 km north of Surat Thani city, Chaiya holds Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya, an 8th-century pagoda with relics from the maritime Srivijaya empire, plus the Suan Mokkh forest hermitage founded by Buddhadasa Bhikkhu. The nearby village of Ban Phumriang weaves gold-thread silk (pha yok) and produces Chaiya’s well-known salted duck eggs, both worth a stop if you’re already in the area.
Koh Nang Yuan
From Koh Tao or Samui, a speedboat run to the triplet islands of Koh Nang Yuan, joined by three converging sandbars, gets you to the Japanese Gardens shallow reef, one of the more reliable snorkeling spots in the Gulf for spotting reef fish without a long swim out.
Don’t try to combine two of these in one day
Ang Thong, Cheow Lan, and Chaiya each take most of a day on their own once transfer time is counted, and they depart from different piers or roads entirely. Trying to stack the marine park and the lake into one itinerary usually means rushing both and missing the boat back; pick one per day and treat the others as separate trips if your stay allows it.
Verdict: if you only have one day to spend outside your base, the Ang Thong boat trip beats the Cheow Lan cruise for scenery per hour, but the lake wins if you’d rather swim than snorkel.
