Tokyo Day Trips: Fuji, Hakone and Kawagoe
Mount Fuji is not a day trip you improvise. It is a day trip you book, pay a fee for, and check the calendar on before you commit to a date.
Mount Fuji and Kawaguchiko. As of the 2026 season, a mandatory 4,000 yen climbing fee applies across all four trails, Yoshida, Subashiri, Fujinomiya and Gotemba, not just Yoshida as when the charge first started in 2024; it is non-refundable regardless of whether weather or crowds turn you back. Yoshida and Subashiri run July 1 to September 10, Fujinomiya and Gotemba July 10 to September 10, and the Yoshida Trail specifically caps at 4,000 climbers a day with gates closed 2pm to 3am without a hut reservation. Check the official Yoshida Trail portal before you plan a date, and know that the season is narrow enough that a trip outside those windows is a viewing day, not a climbing one.
Hakone, the reliable alternative. The Odakyu Romancecar covers Shinjuku to Hakone in one and a half to two hours. A Hakone Free Pass runs 7,100 yen for two days or 7,500 for three, 1,100 yen for children, covering the local ropeway, Lake Ashi cruise and buses that make up the classic loop. Check current Hakone Free Pass options before you go; on a clear day the cruise delivers a genuine Fuji view, though clouds are common enough that it is worth treating as a bonus rather than a guarantee.
Kawagoe, the trip most people skip. Tobu Tojo Line’s limited express from Ikebukuro covers the distance in about 30 minutes, notably faster than the JR Saikyo Line from Shinjuku at closer to 60. Known as “Little Edo,” its clay-walled kurazukuri warehouse buildings line a historic main street; plan four to five hours for a comfortable half day, less rushed than either Nikko or Hakone.
Kamakura, if a shorter day suits you better. About an hour from Tokyo or Shinjuku via JR Yokosuka Line, built around the Great Buddha at Kotoku-in and Hase-dera Temple, easily paired with a further hour to Enoshima for a coastal finish.
