Day Trips to and from Trakai

Kernavė, a real UNESCO day trip
About 35km north of Trakai, Kernavė’s five defensive hillfort mounds above the Pajauta Valley mark Lithuania’s legendary 13th-century pagan first capital, paired with a modern archaeological museum on site. It is best reached by rental car or a private tour rather than public transit, and it deserves a half day of its own rather than a rushed add-on to a Trakai castle visit.
Aukštadvaris, for the Devil’s Pit
About 25km southwest along the A16, Aukštadvaris Regional Park holds the Devil’s Pit, a roughly 40-meter-deep funnel-shaped glacial kettle hole in pine forest, along with old sacred springs. It suits travelers who have already done the castle and want a nature-focused half day rather than another round of museums.
Vilnius, for anyone based in Trakai
Travelers staying overnight in Trakai rather than Vilnius can flip this entirely: the capital’s Baroque Old Town, Gediminas’ Tower and Užupis are a 30- to 35-minute train ride away, making Trakai a workable, quieter base for a Vilnius day trip in reverse.

Do Trakai from Vilnius by train rather than car if you only have one day, since parking near the castle fills up on summer weekends; add Kernavė or Aukštadvaris only if you have a rental car or a second day, since neither is realistic by public transport from Trakai itself.
