Vancouver Day Trips by Travel Time
Distance on a map is a poor guide to how a Vancouver day trip actually feels. The North Shore mountains sit closer than they look, Squamish takes about the same time as a long commute, and Victoria eats most of a day just getting there and back. Planning by travel time, rather than kilometers, is the better way to decide how far to go.
Under 30 minutes: the North Shore
Capilano Suspension Bridge Park and Grouse Mountain both sit roughly 20 to 30 minutes from downtown by car or bus. Capilano charges $75 to $80 CAD for an adult ticket online for its suspension bridge, Cliffwalk, and Treetops Adventure, while the free Lynn Canyon Park nearby covers similar ground with its own 1912 bridge and rainforest trails at no cost. Grouse Mountain’s Skyride runs $89 CAD round trip; hikers who climb the adjacent Grouse Grind instead still pay $20 CAD ($10 for children) for the gondola down, since the trail only runs uphill, and should check for active bear advisories before setting out. About an hour: Squamish and Steveston
North on Highway 99, Squamish is close to an hour from downtown and home to the Sea to Sky Gondola , which costs $73.95 CAD booked online or $81.95 CAD at the gate and reaches viewpoints over Howe Sound and the Stawamus Chief. South, Steveston Village in Richmond is about 40 minutes away and keeps its identity as a working fishing port, with the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site and a boardwalk of seafood stalls selling the day’s catch.
Half a day each way: Victoria
BC Ferries sails from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay in around 95 minutes, but the door-to-door trip from downtown Vancouver to downtown Victoria runs closer to three and a half to four hours each way once the drive to the terminal and the wait to board are counted. Foot passenger fares run roughly $19 to $22 CAD one way, vehicles closer to $60 to $80 CAD. Harbour Air cuts the same route to about 35 minutes by floatplane, with fares from about $99 CAD one way downtown to downtown when booked 45 or more days ahead, or $79 CAD airport to airport; a walk-up fare on the day costs more. Choosing by the time you have
A morning that starts before 9am buys the most out of any of these, since parking at the North Shore trailheads and boarding lines at the Tsawwassen terminal both fill by mid-morning on a clear weekend.
