Amman With Kids: Museums, Not Zoos

A nine-year-old will tune out a lecture on the Umayyad Palace in about four minutes flat, but hand the same kid a bank counter to run or a cockpit to sit in and Amman’s family scene actually clicks. The city’s strongest kid attractions sit side by side in one hilltop park, and knowing what to skip matters just as much as knowing what to book.
The Children’s Museum, first stop
The Children’s Museum Jordan, inside King Hussein Public Parks in Dabouq, is the anchor of a family day here. It packs over 185 interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits into one non-profit site founded under Queen Rania: a working miniature city with a bank and a grocery store, a full-scale aviation cockpit, a construction zone, and an outdoor “Secret Garden” for younger kids to burn off energy. Entry runs 3 JOD per person, the museum is closed Tuesdays, and details on hours and school-group visits are posted at cmj.jo . The car museum next door earns its stop too
The Royal Automobile Museum sits immediately next to the Children’s Museum, so there is no reason to skip it even on a tight schedule. Kids gravitate to the armored limousines and stunt motorcycles, and the collection includes the full-scale Martian Rover vehicle built for Ridley Scott’s The Martian, which was filmed in Wadi Rum. Foreign visitors pay 5 JOD, which includes the audio guide; the museum is closed Tuesdays and otherwise runs 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM (11:00 AM on Fridays). Burn off energy at Climbat or Gravity
For an afternoon that has nothing to do with ruins, Climbat Amman in the Na’ur district runs an indoor climbing and bouldering hall with routes starting at age 4, thick floor mats, and harness rentals. Gravity Trampoline Park inside Mecca Mall spans 1,400 square meters of connected trampolines, foam pits, and a toddler jump session, which makes it a reliable fallback during a winter cold snap or a summer heat spike. Amman Waves Aqua Park, on Airport Road, adds an outdoor water-slide option but only runs June through September.
What we will not send you to
Two long-running private facilities, the Yadoudah Zoo and the Ghamadan Zoo, keep coming up in family-travel searches, and we are not going to list either as a highlight. Independent visitor accounts and animal welfare observers have repeatedly documented cramped concrete enclosures and distressed animals at both. The Prince Hashem Bird Garden in Shmeisani is fine for a short toddler stroll, but it is a municipal park, not an attraction worth planning a day around. For a base near King Hussein Parks, check family rooms in Amman on Booking.com rather than defaulting to a downtown hotel that puts you 20 minutes from the museums by taxi.
