Granada With Kids: Science Park to Alcazaba
A live raptor flying overhead inside an indoor biodome is not the first thing most parents expect to find in a city famous for a 700 year old palace, but Granada’s science museum out draws plenty of the historic sights for keeping kids entertained.
Parque de las Ciencias
This 70,000 square meter interactive science museum and planetarium includes a biodome recreating tropical rainforest, coral reef, and mangrove habitats with live lemurs, toucans, and stingrays, hands on physics pavilions, a raptor flight display, and a 50 meter observation tower. Entry runs 7 to 11 euros and it is open Tuesday through Sunday on Avenida de la Ciencia, an easy break from the historic center on a rainy day or during midday heat.
The Alcazaba’s towers
Inside the Alhambra complex, the Alcazaba is the oldest military section, and kids gravitate toward its battlements and the spiral stairs up the Torre de la Vela, where a great bronze bell can still be rung. Because Nasrid Palace entry is a fixed 30 minute timed slot on the ticket, plan the Alcazaba portion of the visit around that slot rather than the other way around, and bring water and sun hats since there is little shade up on the towers.
The hop on hop off tourist train
A small wheeled panoramic train loops the historic center with open windows and multilingual audio guides, including a child audio channel, connecting the Cathedral area to the base of the Alhambra without a steep uphill walk.
Los Cahorros suspension bridge
Older kids and teens who can handle a scramble enjoy the 63 meter hanging bridge over the Monachil River gorge, 20 minutes from the city on City Bus 183, though younger children and anyone uneasy with heights should sit this one out.
Granada’s historic core is closed to outside vehicle traffic, so plan on strollers over car seats for the Albaicin and Sacromonte, and expect steep, uneven cobblestones in both.
Verdict: Parque de las Ciencias is the strongest rainy day or midday heat option in the city, worth building a free morning around rather than squeezing in as an afterthought.
One concrete tip: do the Alcazaba and Nasrid Palaces in the cooler morning slot if the ticket allows a choice, then save the science museum’s air conditioned galleries for the hottest part of the afternoon.
