Rio’s energy is a lot for small legs, but the city has plenty of spots built for a slower pace, calmer water and things that live in tanks instead of open ocean.
Swim where the water actually behaves
Most of Rio’s famous sand faces the open Atlantic, and Copacabana and Ipanema’s shorebreaks and undertows are not gentle enough for toddlers. Two spots buck the trend. Praia Vermelha in Urca is a sheltered 200m cove between Morro da Urca and Morro da Babilônia, with coarse reddish sand and calm surf. Posto 6 in Copacabana sits behind the breakwater of the old fort, giving shallow, protected entry alongside stand-up paddleboard rentals and fishing boats to watch. Keep every family swim inside flagged, lifeguarded sections of ocean beach, and skip Guanabara Bay entirely: sewage contamination rules it out for swimming.
Get face to face with sharks at AquaRio
South America’s largest marine aquarium sits at Praça Muhammad Ali in Gamboa, on the Utopia AquaRio VLT stop, with 10,000 animals across 350 species and a 20-metre underwater tunnel where sand tiger sharks and rays glide overhead. It opens 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 18:00 on weekends and holidays, last entry an hour before close. Foreign-visitor adult tickets run around R$150, Mercosur and Brazilian residents pay roughly R$110 to R$120, and children aged 3 to 11, students and seniors pay around R$75 to R$80; under-3s go free. Book a timed slot in advance for weekends, when queues build fast.
Meet the golden lion tamarins at BioParque do Rio
The old, cage-lined Jardim Zoológico closed for good and reopened in 2021 as BioParque do Rio, built around immersive natural enclosures instead of bars, with a conservation focus that includes the golden lion tamarin breeding program. It sits inside Quinta da Boa Vista in São Cristóvão, a short walk from the São Cristóvão metro and SuperVia station. Note the hours carefully: BioParque opens Wednesday through Sunday only, 09:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:00, and is closed both Monday and Tuesday. Let them run at Jardim Botânico
Founded in 1808 by Dom João VI, the Royal Botanical Garden spreads across 54 flat, stroller-friendly hectares, anchored by a 740-metre avenue of royal palms. Kids tend to light up at the greenhouse of giant Amazonian water lilies and the wild capuchin monkeys overhead. It is open Tuesday to Sunday 08:00 to 17:00 and Monday 12:00 to 17:00. Pricing runs on a residency tier: R$73 for foreign visitors, R$55 for Mercosur residents, R$32 for Brazilian nationals, R$19 for Rio state residents, and free for under-5s and over-60s.
Packing the day
Sunscreen, hats and water are non-negotiable, and tap water should stay bottled or filtered rather than straight from the faucet.
