Trakai with Kids: Castle, Boats, Chocolate
Trakai works for children because everything is within a kilometre of everything else: a real castle on an island, a pier of swan-shaped pedal boats, and two tonnes of chocolate sculpture, all reachable on foot from the same street. No transfers, no queues between stops, no day lost to logistics.
The shape of a good day
Footbridge at 10:00, castle museum until noon, kibinai on Karaimų Street, pedal boats through the early afternoon, chocolate museum when legs give out around 16:00. That order matters: the coaches from Vilnius arrive mid-morning, so the castle is calmest right at opening, and the chocolate museum stays open until 20:00 when everything else has shut.
Trakai Island Castle, the part children care about
The 300 metre wooden footbridge across Lake Galvė does half the work before you even buy a ticket. Inside are stone spiral staircases, old prison cells, knights’ armour and medieval crossbows across eleven exhibition halls, which most children can move through in an hour and a half. Family tickets run €20 for one adult with up to three children and €30 for two adults with up to three children from April to September, falling to €16 and €25 from October to March. Doors open at 10:00 daily in summer, with shorter, closed-Monday hours the rest of the year. Check the seasonal schedule on trakaimuziejus.lt , or book castle entry through Viator so nobody queues.
The red brick looks ancient and the design is 15th-century, but the structure standing today was rebuilt between 1951 and 1962 after the castle spent nearly 300 years in ruins. Older children usually find that more interesting than the armour.
Pedal boats, and the months they exist
Four-person pedal boats rent from the piers along Karaimų Street at €10 to €15 an hour, and some are moulded into swans. You can paddle right up under the castle bastions, which is the photograph the family album wants. Kayaks and paddleboards go by the hour too, at roughly €10 to €15.
Then the season ends. Lake Galvė freezes completely in midwinter and every boat on the water stops from around October or November until April. A February trip planned around pedal boats will not work; a February trip planned around skating on the lake in front of the castle will.
AJ Chocolate Sculpture Museum
Vytauto g. 4, €5 a ticket, and the easiest win in Trakai. Over 100 sculptures carved from roughly two tonnes of dark, milk and white chocolate stand across four scented galleries, and the workshops let children pour and decorate their own bar. Open 08:30 to 20:00 Monday to Friday and 10:00 to 20:00 at weekends. Workshop slots are on ajsokoladas.lt and they book out in summer.
Baking kibinai with the children
Senoji Kibininė at Karaimų g. 65 runs hands-on classes: roll the yeast dough, pack the hand-cut meat, learn the braided seam, eat it warm with broth. Kibinai are the Karaim pastry of Trakai, and the Karaim are a Turkic-speaking Jewish community following Karaite Judaism who were brought here from Crimea by Vytautas the Great around 1397. Fewer than 200 remain in Lithuania, which makes a baking class a more honest introduction to them than any souvenir stall.

The bog walk, and the warning that goes with it
The Varnikai trail is 3.5 km east: a 4.5 to 5.0 km circular route through 200-year-old oak wood onto 1.4 km of wooden boardwalk over the Ilgelis peat bog. Children look for carnivorous sundew, frogs and lizards, and the planks bounce, which is most of the appeal. The boardwalk has no railings and will not take a pushchair, so infants need a carrier and small children need a hand.
Where can children meet animals?
Alpaca Family Park at Raudoniškės, about 9 km northeast, keeps over 40 alpacas from Chile and Peru. Children pet them, hand-feed carrot slices and walk alongside them, and the farm sells unprocessed alpaca wool knitwear. Sessions run by advance booking rather than drop-in, so arrange it before you travel through alpacafamilypark.com . Naujadvario žirgai, a stable about 3 km west in the national park, does pony rides and beginner lessons.
What Trakai does not have
No zoo, no aquarium, no water park, no roller coasters, no trampoline park. A town of 5,400 people does not support any of it, and the nearest of that kind of thing is back in Vilnius, 28 km east. Set expectations before you arrive and nobody is disappointed.
One date to aim at
The Living Middle Ages festival puts jousting, archery, craft stalls and fire shows inside the Peninsula Castle grounds, scheduled for 19 June 2026. Confirm it with the Trakai tourism centre before booking around it.
Travelling without a car, the walk from the railway station is 2.8 to 3.0 km, roughly 35 minutes, which is a lot to ask of small legs before the day has started. A half-day minivan trip from Vilnius removes that walk from both ends. The Trakai attractions guide has the rest of the ticket prices.
