Bali Multi-Day Trips: Gilis to Komodo

A lot of Bali itineraries slot the Gili Islands in alongside Nusa Penida as if they’re the same kind of side trip. They aren’t: the Gilis sit in Lombok, a different island and province entirely, and that alone changes how much time this needs.
The Gili Islands are not Bali
Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air belong to Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Fast boats leave from three Bali ports: Padang Bai is fastest and cheapest, roughly 1.5 hours from about €20.50 (around IDR 450,000); Sanur crossings run 2-3.5 hours, roughly IDR 425,000-550,000. Since the crossing alone eats most of a day each way, this only makes sense as an overnight-plus trip, never a same-day round trip from Bali.
Nusa Penida, upgraded to an overnight
A rushed single day only reaches the well-trodden west side, Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Crystal Bay. Staying a night opens up the quieter east side, Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach, and gives the island’s genuinely rough interior roads more breathing room than a race back to the last Sanur boat allows.
North Bali and Lovina, with an honest caveat on the dolphins
Munduk’s waterfall trekking, Gitgit and Aling-Aling among them, pairs with Lovina’s sunrise boat trips to see wild dolphins. The trips need a real caveat most Bali content skips : dozens of boats can converge on the same pod at sunrise, sometimes crowding or racing around the animals, and while Buleleng’s local government introduced a 25-meter distance rule in 2023, enforcement is inconsistent. Ask the operator about it directly rather than assuming a “peaceful morning with dolphins” is guaranteed.
Bromo-Ijen and Komodo, both genuinely different islands
Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater sit in East Java, reached by ferry from Gilimanuk to Ketapang, typically a 3-4 day tour with a pre-dawn jeep to Bromo’s rim and a 2am hike into Ijen’s blue-flame crater; best April-November for clear skies.
