Bolivia Tours of Three Days and Longer

Advisory, October 2026. Bolivia has been under a nationwide state of exception since June 2026, and trips of several days are the most exposed to it. Road blockades and protests can close routes, airport roads included, with little warning, and petrol and diesel shortages recur. FCDO guidance is to avoid Chapare Province, with Villa Tunari inside it, unless a journey is essential, and the US warns against travel there. Check the FCDO advice and travel.state.gov before committing, and keep a spare day at each end.

Bolivia Tours of Three Days and Longer

Multi-day tours in Bolivia are sold as packages, so the main decisions are which region, which season and which operator. This page starts with the season, since weather decides what is possible, then covers each region in turn.

Pick the trip by the calendar

  • About December to April, the rainy season. A thin film of water covers the Uyuni salt flat and creates the famous mirror effect, but some routes and Isla Incahuasi can be cut off, and flights are more weather-sensitive. Amazon rivers rise and lowland roads wash out.
  • About May to November, drier months. The salt flat is dry and cracked into polygons, and lowland roads are easier. Altiplano nights, especially June to August, fall well below freezing, and desert refuges have little or no heating.

Whenever you go, budget for delays. Packages quote prices in US dollars because the boliviano floated in 2026 and was near 12 per dollar in late October, while park fees are paid in cash bolivianos.

Uyuni and the southwest desert, 3 days

Shared four-wheel-drive vehicles carry up to six passengers plus driver and cook. Day one covers the train cemetery, the salt workings at Colchani, the flat itself and Isla Incahuasi with its giant cacti. Day two passes flamingo lagoons and wind-cut rock. Day three reaches Laguna Colorada, the Sol de Mañana geysers, the Polques hot springs and Laguna Verde, then returns to Uyuni or crosses into Chile.

Published 2026 packages run from about US$150 on a budget basis to US$180 to 250 mid-range and US$250 to 400 premium. A one-day tour starts around US$59. Eduardo Avaroa Reserve entry is about Bs 150 and Incahuasi about Bs 30. The plateau is above 3,600 m and reaches higher in the reserve, so acclimatise first. The salt flat is not a World Heritage Site. Choose an operator with seatbelts, two spare tyres, a radio and a sober driver, because accidents have happened on unlicensed budget tours. Cards are often refused and ATMs in Uyuni can be empty, so bring cash. BOA flies from La Paz to Uyuni if you want to skip the long bus.

Amazon trips from Rurrenabaque

Flights from La Paz are few, with just a couple of nonstop services a week reported earlier in 2026, so build a spare day into the return. A three-day Pampas del Yacuma trip uses riverboats to see caimans, capybaras and pink river dolphins. Madidi National Park offers longer stays in community lodges such as Chalalán. Reported park fees conflict, at about Bs 120 to 200 for Madidi and about Bs 150 to 200 for the pampas, so confirm on arrival. Carry a yellow fever certificate, ask a clinic about malaria and dengue, use repellent, wear a life jacket in boats and stay out of the water near caimans and piranhas.

Torotoro and the Chiquitos missions

Torotoro, reached from Cochabamba, packs dinosaur footprints, a canyon with a waterfall and a guided cave, Umajalanta, into about three days. Park entry is about Bs 100 for four days and a community guide is required. In the east, a roughly six-day loop from Santa Cruz visits Jesuit mission churches that UNESCO listed in 1990. Ask any operator for the plan and costs in writing.

Entry rules

UK passport holders can stay up to 90 days without a visa, with six months of passport validity. Travellers from the US should confirm entry rules with the Bolivian embassy.
