Multi-Day Hegra: Building the Full Trip
Hegra itself takes half a day, maybe a long morning. Everything that makes the flight worth it happens in the days built around that morning.
A Classic 3-Day Frame
Day one usually covers AlUla Old Town’s mudbrick lanes and sunset at Elephant Rock, often based at Our Habitas AlUla or a similar canyon resort for the whole stay. Day two is Hegra itself: Qasr al-Farid, Jabal Ithlib’s Diwan hall, Jabal al-Banat, and the Hejaz Railway Station, followed by Dadan’s lion tombs and the inscription-covered rock face at Jabal Ikmah in the afternoon, then dinner at Maraya Social. Day three shifts to a Sharaan Nature Reserve safari or a walk on the Oasis Heritage Trail, closing with stargazing at Gharameel after dark.
Going Longer
A 5 to 7 day version pushes north to Wadi Al Disah, a palm-lined canyon through 400 meter red cliffs in Tabuk Province, then on to the Red Sea enclave of Umluj or the older oasis town of Tayma. Both extensions turn AlUla from a single stop into a wider circuit through Saudi Arabia’s northwest, and the driving distances involved are exactly why this only makes sense as a multi-day plan rather than a string of separate day trips.
Shorter 2-day versions exist for travelers pressed for time, compressing Hegra and Dadan into one day and AlUla Old Town or Elephant Rock into the other, though the desert safari and the stargazing evening are usually the first things cut to make that fit.
Where to Base Yourself
Canyon resorts carry most multi-day stays: Our Habitas AlUla in the Ashar Valley, Banyan Tree AlUla with its tented suites, and the more compact Caravan by Habitas for a shorter stopover. Inside Hegra’s own boundary, The Chedi Hegra is the only property built into the archaeological site, occupying the restored 1907 railway station.
Renting a car makes sense for the drive between AlUla town, the resorts, and Winter Park, but not for Hegra’s interior, where private vehicles still aren’t permitted past the visitor gates regardless of how many days you’re staying.
Booking the Trip
AlUla Moments festival season, roughly mid-November through January, is also the region’s mildest weather window, so flights, canyon resorts, and the better dinner reservations get booked out 6 to 10 weeks ahead.
