Lyon Multi-Day Trips: One Base or Two
Multi-day trips from Lyon are not packaged products. They are combinations of single legs that you string together yourself, and the real decision is how many beds you need. One base with day trips is simplest. A second base makes sense only for Annecy.
Option one: stay in Lyon the whole time
Choose a hotel near Part-Dieu, Bellecour or Vieux Lyon and travel out each morning. Trains to Vienne take 15 to 25 minutes, Pérouges is about 20 to 27 minutes plus a short uphill walk, and Annecy is around 2 hours each way. You unpack once, you keep a familiar route home, and you can swap days when the weather changes. This works for three to five nights.
A sample shape: one day in Vieux Lyon and on Fourvière hill, one day at the Halles and the Confluences museum, one day in Vienne, and one day among the Beaujolais villages with a tour. The three-day itinerary follows the same pattern.
Option two: add one night in Annecy
Annecy is far enough that a day trip eats four hours on the train. A night there gives you the lake in morning light and the old-town canals in the evening. Direct TER trains take about 1 hour 51 minutes to 2 hours, and fares run roughly €20 to €30. Check times on SNCF Connect and compare lodging on Booking.com .
Chamonix needs its own trip
Chamonix has no direct rail link from Lyon, and the quickest journey takes roughly 4 hours 38 minutes. Plan it as a separate Alpine stay, not as an add-on to Lyon.
Arriving and leaving
From Lyon-Saint-Exupéry airport, the Rhônexpress tram-train takes about 30 minutes to Part-Dieu, every 15 minutes between 04:25 and midnight. A single ticket is €16.30 online or €17.40 at the machine. Book on rhonexpress.fr . Children under 12 ride free.

Paying for the days
A TCL 24 hour pass costs €7.10, and the City Card is €29.90, €41.90, €52.90 or €63.90 online for 1 to 4 days. On a four-day stay, the card pays only if you visit several paid museums. Details live on the tourist office site .
When to book ahead
Hotels fill around the Fête des Lumières on 5 to 8 December, and the city advises booking many months ahead for those dates. The festival itself is free and needs no ticket.
Staying safe
Pickpockets work Part-Dieu station, Bellecour and busy metro cars. Keep your luggage close during transfers. After dark, avoid lingering around Place Gabriel Péri in La Guillotière.
