Multi-day Trips Mandalay
Travel advisory: The US government advises against all travel to Myanmar, and the UK advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay and against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of the city. Fighting, drone attacks, curfews and internet shutdowns continue, and many sites were damaged in the March 2025 earthquake. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.
Multi-Day Trips from Mandalay
Multi-day routes from Mandalay historically combined the city with Mingun, Sagaing, Inwa and Pyin Oo Lwin. Under current official advice these are not trips to plan, and the condition and access of every site below are unconfirmed since the March 2025 earthquake.
Mandalay city
- Mahamuni Pagoda, Shwenandaw Monastery, Kuthodaw Pagoda and Mandalay Palace were the main sights. Mahamuni had a building collapse in its compound, Kuthodaw suffered serious structural damage and the palace was damaged.
Mingun
- Mingun lies in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel. Hsinbyume Pagoda was largely destroyed, and the unfinished Mingun Pahtodawgyi is damaged and closed to climbing.
Sagaing and Inwa
- Sagaing Hill is known for its pagodas and monasteries and lies in a region where the UK advises against all travel.
- Inwa lost most of its historic structures, with the Maha Aungmye Bonzan (Me Nu) nearly destroyed.
Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo)
- A former British hill station known for the National Botanical Gardens. It lies in an area where the UK advises against all travel, and rocket attacks have hit the town.
Practical notes
- Remove shoes when entering temples or monasteries.
- Avoid giving money to children.
