Multi-day Trips Mandalay Region

Travel advisory: The US government advises against all travel to Myanmar, and the UK advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay and against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of the city. Fighting, drone attacks, curfews and internet shutdowns continue, and many sites were damaged in the March 2025 earthquake. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.

Multi-Day Trips in Mandalay Region

Multi-day routes through Mandalay Region historically linked Mandalay city, the nearby ancient capitals and Bagan. Under current official advice these are not trips to plan, and the condition and access of the sites below are unconfirmed since the March 2025 earthquake.

Mandalay city and surrounds

• The city is the former royal capital, known for its palace, temples and markets. The palace was damaged in the earthquake.
• U Bein Bridge at Amarapura is a long teak footbridge, and its current condition is unconfirmed.
• Mingun lies in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel. Hsinbyume Pagoda was largely destroyed in the earthquake.

Sagaing and Monywa

• Sagaing and Monywa lie in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel. Sagaing is known for its monasteries and nunneries, and Kaunghmudaw Pagoda is a well known white stupa. Access to both is unconfirmed.

Bagan

• Bagan is known for its plain of thousands of temples. The US advises against all travel to Myanmar, so check current advice before considering any route.

Practical notes

• Dress modestly at temples and remove shoes before entering.
• The region is hot year-round, with the hottest period from March to May.
• Checkpoints are common, so carry a passport.
