Taipei Is Taiwan's Multi-Day Trip Gateway
Two train stations, Taipei Main Station and Nangang, put the entire island within a half-day’s ride, so a multi-day trip built from Taipei almost never means staying in Taipei.
The High Speed Rail western corridor (2 to 4 days). THSR gets you to Taichung in 45 to 60 minutes; connect onward by Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus to Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County for the CNN-noted lakeside bike path, Wenwu Temple, and solar-powered passenger boats crossing the alpine water. Push on to Chiayi (75 to 85 minutes by THSR) for the Alishan National Scenic Area: the historic Alishan Forest Railway fully reopened its entire 71.6 km main line from Chiayi to Alishan on July 6, 2024, after 15 years of typhoon repairs, so the narrow-gauge train through four climate zones to the Zhushan sunrise is running end to end again. Book online 14 days ahead; as of March 2, 2026, online tickets require immediate payment.
Historic Tainan (2 to 3 days). THSR to Tainan runs 85 to 95 minutes. Taiwan’s oldest cultural capital centers on Chihkan Tower and Anping Old Fort, with Shennong Street for evening wandering and a food list built around beef soup, milkfish, and eel noodles.
Kaohsiung and Kenting (3 to 4 days). The THSR terminus at Zuoying sits 95 to 110 minutes from Taipei. Kaohsiung’s Pier-2 Art Center and the Great Harbor Bridge make a solid city day before continuing south to Kenting National Park for beaches, coral reefs, and its own night market scene.
The scenic east coast loop (3 to 4 days). Board a TRA EMU3000 or Tze-Chiang express train from Taipei Main Station through Yilan toward Taitung and the East Rift Valley. Cycle Mr. Brown Avenue’s rice paddies in Chishang, explore indigenous Amis coastal culture, and catch a ferry from Taitung out to volcanic Green Island for saltwater hot springs and diving. Regular train service to Hualien City and coastal spots like Qixingtan Beach runs normally, but any push into the Taroko Gorge mountain interior needs separate, current verification given the 2024 earthquake damage there.
The full round-island loop, “Huan Dao” (5 to 7+ days). The classic version departs Taipei south down the western high-speed corridor through Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung, rounds the tropical southern tip at Kenting, then rides the scenic eastern coastal railway back north through Taitung and Yilan to Taipei.
Verdict: if you have exactly 3 days to spare, Taichung plus Sun Moon Lake beats Chiayi plus Alishan for pure ease, since the THSR connection is shorter and the bus transfer to the lake is simpler than the mountain railway timing. Save Alishan for a trip with a fourth day of slack in case of a delayed transfer.
