From Venice: Florence, Milan, Ljubljana

Verona, Padua and the Dolomites are all genuinely doable in a single day from Venice, which is exactly why none of them are here. This page is only for the places worth an actual overnight, out past the Veneto entirely.
Florence: fast, but still not a day trip
Frecciarossa and Italo combined run the route in roughly 2 hours to 2 hours 20 minutes, with more than 36 direct departures a day. That speed makes a rushed round trip tempting, but a there-and-back burns over 4 hours of travel for a city that rewards at least one night away. Milan: the other high-speed axis
Direct high-speed trains run roughly 2 hours 6 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes, with 40 to 60 direct departures daily, easily Venice’s other major rail connection. Fashion and business capital rather than lagoon city, it’s a genuinely easy 2 to 3 night add-on for a different register entirely. Check current Milan train times on Trainline .
Ljubljana: the bus beats the train here
There’s no direct train; the rail route runs through a change at Villach, Austria, and takes a genuinely slow 6 hours 47 minutes door to door. The direct bus, several daily departures, roughly 3.5 hours from Piazzale Roma, is clearly the better call, and the one this page recommends. Book the Venice-Ljubljana bus on Omio . Slovenia’s capital is a different, Slavic and Alpine register from anything in Italy, and combined with Lake Bled it’s a common pick for travelers with an extra 2 to 3 days. Don’t let a listing that implies a single through train talk you out of the bus; two independent route-planning sources agree no direct rail service exists, whatever a fare aggregator’s headline says.
Verdict: choose Florence or Milan for a fast rail extension, or Ljubljana for a genuinely different country, but book the bus rather than the slower train for that last one.
