Zurich as a Base for 2 to 4 Days

Zurich does not have a catalogue of established multi-day tours of its own, and this page does not pretend otherwise. What it does have is a very good rail hub, so a stay of two to four days works best as a base with day outings. The questions below are the ones that usually decide the plan. Prices are in Swiss francs (CHF).

Should I stay in Zurich the whole time?

For two or three nights, yes. Everything in the city is close together, and trains to Lucerne take 41 to 50 minutes, Rhine Falls about 50 minutes and Stein am Rhein about 1 hour 10 minutes. Changing hotels would waste more time than it saves. For the Jungfrau region the answer changes: the transfers from Zurich are long, so a night or two in Interlaken is the better base.

What does a good three days look like?

Day one, the Old Town and the lake. Ride the Polybahn to the ETH terrace, walk through Niederdorf, climb the Karlsturm at the Grossmünster (CHF 5), see the Chagall windows in the Fraumünster (CHF 5), then take a lake cruise from Bürkliplatz (about CHF 9.20 for the short one).

Day two, museums and Zürich-West. Spend the morning at the Landesmuseum (CHF 13 now, CHF 18 from 5 January 2027, closed Mondays), then book the Lindt Home of Chocolate in Kilchberg (CHF 17). In the afternoon explore the railway arches of Im Viadukt and the Freitag tower. If it is a Thursday, the Kunsthaus stays open until 20:00 and a full ticket is about CHF 31.

Day three, Lucerne and the Rigi. Take the early train to Lucerne, walk the Chapel Bridge, then ride boat and cogwheel railway to the Rigi summit and return through Arth-Goldau. The Rigi circuit is free with a Swiss Travel Pass and about CHF 55 without one for the Vitznau to Rigi Kulm return.

Which pass, if any?

A Zürich Card (CHF 29 for 24 hours, CHF 56 for 72 hours) covers city transport and many museums, including the Landesmuseum and the Kunsthaus permanent collection. It does not include the long lake cruise or the Felsenegg cable car. A Swiss Travel Pass makes sense only if you plan several long rail days. City fares rise slightly on 13 December 2026, and the Zürich Card terms are worth confirming when you book.

What about the Uetliberg?

It suits a spare half day, but until 13 December 2026 the S10 does not run from Zürich HB. Walk about 12 minutes to Selnau or take tram 3 or 14 to Stauffacher.

When do the big events happen?

Sechseläuten is planned for Monday 19 April 2027, with the burning of the Böögg at Sechseläutenplatz from about 15:00. Street Parade is planned for 14 August 2027. Confirm both dates with the organisers before you book anything.
