Galway Date Ideas and Couple Evenings
Four evenings, four moods
Rather than a single itinerary, here are four ways to spend an evening as a couple in Galway. Pick the mood that suits you. Prices are in euro.
Mood one: golden hour
Walk out onto the Long Walk, the row of coloured houses running along the river mouth beside the Spanish Arch. As the sun goes down, the bay turns gold and the Burren hills fade into outlines. Continue to the Claddagh and watch the swans in the basin.
Mood two: a little history
At 1 Quay Street, Thomas Dillon’s Claddagh Gold runs a free ring museum behind its shop, open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00. The Claddagh design carries a heart for love, hands for friendship and a crown for loyalty. The firm says it dates to 1750. Writers credit the ring to the goldsmith Richard Joyce, though no one can prove he alone created it.
Mood three: music and a snug
The Crane Bar on Sea Road has a session every night, and the upstairs room starts at about 21:30. At 17 Cross Street, Tigh Neachtain gives live traditional music through the week and has little corners for two. Taaffe’s Bar on Shop Street plays at 17:00 and 21:00 each day, which suits an early evening.
Mood four: a special dinner
Glenlo Abbey Hotel keeps its Pullman restaurant in two carefully restored Orient Express carriages: Leona from 1927 and Linda from 1954. The hotel sits by Lough Corrib on the edge of the city, and the restaurant reopened after a refurbishment in 2025. Reserve well in advance.
A longer romantic outing
Connemara has two good options. Ballynahinch Castle Hotel is a castle hotel on a salmon river, and the hotel can explain rooms and fishing terms. Kylemore Abbey’s walled garden and church are open on a single ticket of about €18 for an adult (check the abbey’s own site). On the way, Connemara National Park lets you walk the lower trails at no cost.
A scenic boat home
Between early April and late September, the afternoon boat from Kilronan to Galway City Docks calls at the Cliffs of Moher around 16:15 and docks at about 18:00. The adult fare is €35.
Practical notes
Rain is common in any month, so the pub and dinner options hold up well. Pick a calm evening for the seafront, and keep clear of the Blackrock Diving Tower edge, where the water is cold and tidal.
