Romantic Lyon in Every Season
Romantic Lyon in Every Season
Lyon suits couples all year, but the best evening changes with the calendar. Spring wants a terrace, summer wants late light on the hill, autumn wants a vineyard, and December wants candles in the streets. Here is a plan for each.
Spring: golden hour on Fourvière
Take the funicular from Vieux Lyon to the basilica esplanade and watch the roofs turn amber. The esplanade is free, and the funicular takes a standard TCL ticket at €2.10 each way. Before the climb, wander the old town’s cobbled lanes and slip through a traboule, remembering that residents live there. Speak quietly and keep moving. Basilica hours shift with the seasons, and fourviere.org has the current times.
Summer: a river hour and a late table
The basilica stays open later in summer, which stretches the evening on the hill. Les Bateaux Lyonnais runs one-hour cruises on the Saône from 2 quai des Célestins, about €15 per adult, with departures during the day. Check the schedule on lesbateauxlyonnais.com and book the afternoon sailing, then walk back along the quay for dinner.
For a view over the Rhône, Les Trois Dômes is a panoramic rooftop restaurant on the top floor of the Sofitel at 20 quai Docteur-Gailleton. Reserve a window table in advance and check the menu before you go.
Autumn: golden stone and wine
Spend a day among the Pierres Dorées villages north of Lyon. Oingt is the best known, with stone lanes that glow in afternoon sun, and a glass of Beaujolais on a terrace is the whole point. A car or a half-day tour from about €100 per person makes the visit easy, since public transport is thin among the vines. You can compare options on GetYourGuide .
For one very special dinner, the Auberge du Pont de Collonges holds two Michelin stars in 2026. It is Paul Bocuse’s former flagship in Collonges-au-Mont-d’Or, about 15 minutes north of Lyon. Treat it as a splurge and read the menu before booking.
Winter: candles and a cosy bouchon
Lyon shines in December. The Fête des Lumières runs from 5 to 8 December 2026 and is free, with illuminations across the city, so check fetedeslumieres.lyon.fr for the programme. Hotels sell out, and crowds in Vieux Lyon and on the Presqu’île are thick in the evenings.
Outside the festival, book a table at a restaurant holding the Les Bouchons Lyonnais label, listed at lesbouchonslyonnais.org . Share a pot of Beaujolais and a tarte aux pralines, and linger. Café Comptoir Abel on rue Guynemer is open daily.
Looking after yourselves
Pickpockets work Bellecour, Part-Dieu and crowded metro cars, and festival nights draw large crowds, so keep bags zipped in front. After dark, take the main avenues around La Guillotière instead of stopping at Place Gabriel Péri.
Where next
For a longer stay, the three-day itinerary gives a route that leaves room for dinners. See also the day trips page if you want a countryside day.
Tip: reserve the restaurant first, then plan the funicular ride to finish an hour before the booking.
