Hang Mua’s climb, roughly 486 to 500 stone steps to a carved dragon statue overlooking the Tam Coc valley , is a daytime workout for most visitors and a golden-hour payoff for anyone willing to time it for late afternoon. Entry is about 100,000 to 150,000 VND plus a small parking fee, gates open until around 7pm, and the crowds that pack the summit at midday are largely gone by the time the light turns gold over the Ngo Dong River.

A quieter boat than Trang An or Tam Coc
Van Long Nature Reserve , a wetland 20 kilometers north known locally as the “Bay Without Waves,” offers a private early-morning sampan before any tour groups arrive, gliding in near-total silence past limestone cliffs where wild Delacour’s langurs climb at dawn. It is a genuinely different experience from the busier, ticketed circuits at Trang An and Tam Coc, and worth the earlier alarm.
Slower ways to spend a day together
Tandem cycling along the dikes between Tam Coc and Dam Khe village passes wooden footbridges over lotus ponds that bloom pink in summer, a low-effort counterpart to the Hang Mua climb, and most homestays rent bicycles cheaply enough that it costs almost nothing to add to a slower day. Evenings favor restaurants on wooden terraces with unobstructed karst views, since Ninh Binh’s real dining draw is the scenery outside the window as much as the northern Vietnamese food on the table.
Book dinner reservations ahead during the late May harvest season.
