A Romantic Weekend at Lake Ohrid
A weekend in Ohrid for two is built from three or four simple pieces. Formal romantic packages are few, so the plan below relies on the lake, the evenings and a little local craft. Prices are in Macedonian denars (MKD), at about 61.5 MKD to the euro, and boat fares are often quoted in euros.
Friday evening: Kaneo at sunset
Head to the Kaneo viewpoint above the lake before the sun drops. The grounds and the viewpoint are free. Afterwards, look for a table nearby. Kaneo Letna Bavca and Restaurant, at Kocho Racin 43, is listed as family-run since 1993, and Kaj Kanevche is a pier-side name in the guides. Check opening times for both. Fish is the natural order, though the Ohrid trout is protected and overfished, so ask about its origin or choose brown trout.
Saturday: the boat to St Naum
The shared boat leaves the main pier at about 10:00 and returns at about 15:30 to 16:00, with 90 minutes of travel each way. It costs about EUR 10 round trip on large boats. A small exclusive boat on the same run costs about EUR 20. Sailing Stone Travel has the boat details.
At St Naum, a rowboat on the Black Drim springs costs about 600 MKD per boat and lasts about 30 minutes. The monastery is a working one, so lower your voice if you walk in. In July and August, the beach beside it has changing shacks for a swim.
Saturday evening or Sunday morning: a pearl
The Ohrid pearl suits a keepsake. The Talev and Filev families are widely reported to be the only ones who hold the method, and both have shops in the Old Town. Ask where any piece was made, and do not rely on a certificate, since many shops hand them out. Aramco World tells the story of the craft.
Swimming together
Surface water is about 22 to 24 C in July and August, and the usual spots are Gradiste, Labino and St Naum. The shore is stony and steep, and most free beaches have no reliable lifeguard, so keep to depths where you can stand.
Keeping it light
Ohrid has no long list of couple-specific experiences. Two evenings, one boat day and a pearl shop make a full weekend, and unplanned time along the shore fills the rest.
