A Romantic San Francisco Weekend
The best romantic evenings in San Francisco happen at the edges: fog lifting off a hilltop, lights coming on across the bay, a small table tucked away from the crowds at Fisherman’s Wharf. Build a couple of days around a handful of these and you’ll have something the postcards can’t quite capture.
Start with sunset on the water. Adventure Cat’s catamaran sunset sails depart Pier 39 or the Marina and run past Alcatraz and under the Golden Gate Bridge as the city lights come up, generally $65 to $85 a person for a 90-minute sail. For a daytime stroll, walk down Lombard Street’s switchbacks instead of driving them (you’ll wait 30-45 minutes in a vehicle queue otherwise), then continue on to the Palace of Fine Arts, whose Greco-Roman rotunda and lagoon full of swans make an easy, unhurried picnic spot. Pick up cheese, charcuterie, and a warm baguette at the Ferry Building Marketplace beforehand.
Dinner is where San Francisco earns its reputation. The city carries three Michelin three-star kitchens: Atelier Crenn in Cow Hollow, Benu in SoMa, and Quince in Jackson Square, all of which need reservations weeks out. Gary Danko in Fisherman’s Wharf is still one of the most romantic fixed-price rooms in the city even without a star on the door these days, and Kokkari Estiatorio’s Financial District dining room does upscale Greek in a setting built for a long, unhurried night.
If you’re staying near Haight-Ashbury, Buena Vista Park sits on one of the city’s highest hills and gets far fewer visitors than Twin Peaks, even though the sunset views over the bay are just as wide. It’s an easy after-dinner walk rather than a destination in itself, which makes it a nice way to close out an evening without planning around it.
Cap the trip with a cable car ride together; the Powell-Hyde cable car line crests Nob Hill and drops toward Aquatic Park and Ghirardelli Square, $9 a ride through early January 2027, and it’s the kind of small, shared moment that ends up in every retelling of the trip.
